Looking for creative bookends

Needed bookends for shelves in living room area. I prefer something rustic or old looking.

Rustic can mean many styles from physically rusty items to vintage to country. I think some old bricks might be interesting. Other items could include ironwork pieces, unfinished /rough wood, silver serving pieces or just about anything heavy enough to support your books. What is your style?

I had some very old cotton bale scales that had heavy weights on them. I took the weights off and use them for bookends. They are vintage and look good with my decor. By the way, I purchased them on ebay .

I use items that I enjoy looking at - heavy glass globes, small stacked boxes of all kinds, pottery, Balinese tjaps (Used for batik and other printing), other books, old cameras

Check salvage yards and thrift stores and think about weight, size and balance of the items that might work. Example : I use two old lanterns. They don't match and neither one works and isn't worth fixing it to make it work. I filled the tanks that holds the fuel with plaster to give it enough weight that the books won't tip it over. Use your imagination. A mason jar filled with nuts and bolts might work if you like it. Browse through a hardware store for more ideas.

Vintage canning jars (with the zinc lids) filled with marbles, sea glass or seashells (depending on the weight you need) - beautiful conversation pieces.

I like to find old shelf supports or architectural brackets and turn them on their side, straight side toward the books. You could paint them, but if you're lucky enought to find old ones with character, I'd leave them like that.
