Idea needed for a blank canvas of a room

Samantha
by Samantha
I'm running out of ideas to help create a spacious but modern looking bedrooms.. Less is more. Any opinions about colour schemes? the room would be the "master" bedroom for my parents..
I'm standing at the door way looking in.. So the shape is a bit odd.. I'll pop in measurments when I can.. Basic rectangle shape bedroom.
Updated look and it feels more cosy for a master bedroom on a tight budget.. Bed still needs to be added :)

A few questions first. Will there be carpeting, what color is the furniture ,based on the photo hard to tell how much natural lighting is in the room which is always important on choosing paint colors.

@Samantha The flooring is beautiful. I think maybe asking your parents may be a good idea as well.(if that is possible),however in the mean time you can research furniture ideas on Houzz, which has a lot of contemporary ideas.

The best thing is to get input from your parents as to what they like. Have them look at photos online, magazines, etc to get ideas and even an inspiration room. Then work from that starting point! So many ideas can be put into play in a blank space :-) What a fun project this would be! :-)

Wait until you see the state the bathroom was! Keep in mind, I must do this house up with as little cost as possible so I managed to score a good deal for the bathroom

Well done, you! Connie's right; find a style your parents like and adapt it to your room. As to color, a neutral on the walls is a good bet. And not just beige. Many more vivid colors can be considered neutral. Grays are in right now, but IMHO a soft blue or green would also work (soft being the pertinent word). A white could work well and would reflect the marvelous job on the bath. But choose an creamy rather than a stark white. I don't know how Ireland's thrift stores/charity shops work but in the states they're an excellent place to look for furniture. Or try Craigslist (or gumtree or buyandsell or max.it). Here in the states one can also find furniture pieces put out for garbage pickup. Often in the cities there's a particular time of the month where the company will pick up big items; that's the best time to go searching. Good luck! It sounds like fun, and I'm sure your parents will appreciate it. Please show us what you come up with.

@Samantha What a shame about the charity shops. And the roadside finds, or lack thereof. Still, you might check apartment building dumpsters around the first of the month. Here, when people move out, they often trash their unwanted furniture. (I know, it's a crying shame. Better to donate to a thrift shop, IMO.) My sister found some great pieces at her apartment complex.

I like to go to a good fabric store and find a fabric that I absolutely love. Even if it's expensive fabric you can afford a half yard to make a small pillow. Then you have a starting point for color and style. You can build a beautiful room from a beautiful piece of fabric.

Glad I could help. Be sure to take a swatch of the fabric with you when shopping for anything else for your room. That way you can be sure anything else you buy will work with your fabric.

Not knowing what they want in terms of light control, you could do grommet top draperies, they take less fabric than pleated drapes. Hardware can be pricey, so you could use a galvanized pole from the electrical dept of your local DIY store and spray paint it. There are so many lovely blue/greys in paint these days and if you did the trim in white it really stands out. I did my Mom's living room in one and what a difference from the old boring "oatmeal/beige"! Really made the room feel lovely and restful and modern even with her antiques which we love. Depending on the age of your parents, (mine are 85), a rug gives warmth but may be a trip hazard. Hope these ideas help. Keep us posted!

@Samantha Yes, if they are the same as what I am thinking. I have used them myself. As long as they are big enough to go over the pole they should do fine. Just stitch them to the top of your fabric.

I have one word for a clean modern look....... Monochromatic ..... With use of your parents' favorite color, use a few shades (or 50 shades hahaha) of the same color as well as black or white in the mix..... ie: a dark navy blue on one wall ( or all walls) then main bedding in white for a pop, many shades of lighter blues in pillows and throws and in the artwork...... simple clean lines in the furniture...... an awesome website for inspiration (enter in the search bar what you want to see pics of like "blue monochromatic bedrooms") and you will see THOUSANDS of pics! www.houzz.com

Thank You Kathleen would you believe I was trying to think of that word monochromatic cause my dad said he likes to keep in one colour and from his previous decor, it clearly shows. :) couldn't help but laugh at the 50 shades remark :) ha haha. Will google that now! :)

Will do Hun! Fair play to my dad, my 26 year old bro and the cousin helping with the labour stuff. They've done a pretty awesome job so far.

Were you able to save the pretty leaded glass windows? Maybe you could use them for decoration elsewhere. Great job on the remodel so far!
