I make my own accent furniture ...I can't just jump right in in start painting can I? Do I have to sand even if it's bare?

It seems like you will be happier with the end product if you sand, then wipe it down thoroughly, then prime and paint.

That's right, a light sand up front is easy and effective. Oil base primer will give you the smoothest surface after sanding but is more hassle to use than latex. As well, oil-base finish paint will give you the hardest and smoothest finish but takes longer to dry, has more vapors, must be cleaned up with thinner, etc. CP
