What can I do with these buckets?

Question

I have 9 of these buckets that I got from buying strawberries. They have handles & are just too nice to throw away. I would love some suggestion on what to do to them. Thank you, Carlene

They could be used as strawberry buckets, add moss , dirt and berry plant.

I would store onions and garlic, under the bath and kitchen sink stuff, small toys.
There are spray paints that will work on plastic or just cover at advertizing with large stickers or print your own sticker labels.

I'd plant them with strawberry plants (at least 1/2). These are good size for storage containers in the bath, linen closet or bedroom closet. We have two shelves above the hanging rod in our closet and I put out of season stuff (warm gloves, knitted neck warmers, heavy socks, etc) in baskets similar to this on the very top shelf. When the rainy weather starts, they come down and the flip-flops, spaghetti string tops and other small 'summer' stuff goes in. Handy, accessible, utilizing storage space that might otherwise go untapped.

Put some holes in the bottom and plant each one with assorted colorful annuals. Since they have handles you can also hang them from trees and grow sweet potato vines,ivies,lantanas,million bells anything trailing. That would be something different. I just realized the wholes in them so first put in basket coco liners.

A few ideas that came to mind are, kids toys for tub, water drains and then store till next bath.  Use in garden as a quick rinse, just place in a bit larger bucket, place veg. or fruit in as you pick, when done just pick up your strawberry basket and less mess in your kitchen. Gather eggs in.

I'm not too sure what size they are. I'm guessing kinda small.. If you want to all arty crafty, I say, get yourself a glue gun, some twine and be creative wrapping it around the bottom of it as high as you like. With the writing, stick on a chalkboard contact paper so that you can label the contents you place inside. You can paint them using plastic suitable spray paint and reuse them for planters inside or hanging outside. Or a little planter novelty in the bathroom . Or have a rope or strong twine or thin chain hanging and attach little hooks on the bucket handles to create stackable hanging storage for those bits and pieces in any room garage or bathroom..

I have a similar issue every year, our local berry farm uses these sorts of buckets also. If you have your own garden they're great for picking your own produce. Drilling several tiny holes in the bottom also makes them work as a colander so you can pre rinse the dirt off your veggies easily outside, making a whole lot less mess inside.

This year I've also decided to try spraying them with Krylon for plastic in some really funky colors, wrapping the handle with twine, lining with moss or coconut mat and using them for hanging baskets. Since they're only a gallon I know they won't hold a lot, but what they lack in size they sure make up for in sheer number, and I'm imagining using a five point shepherds hook set in the middle of my huge porch pots so I can have a really neat double decker look.

If you have a fence or a sunny wall, put strong and longer hooks in, for example the fence, fill buckets with soil and plant veggies or flowers. and hang the buckets

These buckets are perfect to use as planters using walmart bags as a liner. You can look up on youtube 'walmart bag planters' or 'Larry Hill'. Larry gives a wonderful presentation as to why these are 'self maintaining and grow larger healthier fruits and vegetables'. i.e. when the root reaches the air, it sends a msg to the plant to spend it's energy growing the above ground plant. Well OK, those are my words. Look it up, you too will be impressed. And Larry, well he is just full of it (ideas that is!) Lawn fabric works just as well. Another term commonly used is 'rain gutter grow system'. Terms in quotes would be the search term on youtube.

They could be used as baskets for each person to keep their toiletries in. There is paint for plastic items. Anyone going off to college might like them. Give them an off to college gift filled with their favorite soaps, shampoos, conditioners, moisturizers, scubbies. They can keep it all right there in their dorm room.

Laundry storage was my 1st thought. Also they would make great hanging plant containers. Paint and fill w/moss/dirt/plants. Don't forget using for storage in your pantry, bathroom or bath for supplies, kids toys. Good luck!

Painting them is a great idea. The holes will not be lost by being covered and give it character. I'm partial to the planter suggestion, wether it is hung or sitting on a shelf. A dried flower set up only in a couple. Once painted they might even do well filled with goodies and given as a gift basket.

Spray paint them any college colors, for new high school grads going away to college, and fill with toiletries, wash cloth, and hand towel for a great graduation gift.  Or paint blue/pink and fill with baby bath items, wash cloth, and towel for that new mom and dad.  Or paint vibrant colors and keep small pool toys in them.  The holes will help drain the water.  You could also use them to store a few bathroom cleaning supplies and keep in each bathroom, under the sink, for a quick clean-up!  Or you could even use them for flatware, salt, pepper, napkins, stackable melamine glasses, etc., for al fresco dining on the porch.  Just grab the bucket and your plates, food, carafe of strawberry lemonade, and you're good to go!  I also have a bunch of these from Strawberry Hill that had the most divine strawberries in them!

I decided to cut the bottoms out and put over some garden plants. Dig down to put several inches of the basket in the dirt to help protect plants from bugs, worms and pest.
