Does anyone know what this weed is? We just moved into this house in the fall is now this is coming up everywhere!

No it does not and it makes a woody stem with a bush type of habitat that will be there next year as remnants of the plant. Then it will resprout from the same "stump" although that may not be the best word for the remnant of the plant. I have never seen one get over 2' high and I have seen them everywhere, especially along road sides.

No milky sap. And Paul yes it does have a woody stump and very determined roots! Is there anything that I can safely use to get rid of it? I was planning on a vegetable garden but those roots are everywhere I try to dig!

It doesn't look like there is too much growing around them, so you could spray with Roundup or another herbicide containing glyphosate.

If I do spray, can I plant soon afterwards? It is bad enough fighting the clay soil! To think that I moved down here from MA thinking that I would be able to garden to my hearts content only to find they don't have soil here, only clay and weeds! Oh well, going to try to make the best of it. Thank you for your suggestions Douglas, going to give them a try.

We live in Central Fla and have these every year especially if it has been a dry and warm Winter like this past season. We just pull them up, root and all. They grown more in our yard than in our flower/vege gardens.

Is it prickly? I have something that looks like that taking over my garden seemed to do it after I planted some marigold seeds someone gave me a two years ago. I try to pull them and they stick me all the time. I sprayed weed killer and got rid of most of it but the roots seem to be still in the ground sticking up a little

I live in Ga, and also have the red clay, I use Ortho-Max Weed b gone. you can buy it in a spray bottle. all you have to do is hook it up to the hose and spray.the weeds die but not the grass.

I does look like rue. i have this in my garden and anything that doesn't look like a definite weed I leave it . Mine was Rue and I have found other weeds that are beautiful and actually serve a purpose.

Don't know what it its but not Rue. Try the boiling water. Won't hurt anything but the plant you pour it on.

If it Rue it helps deter mosquitoes....check with the nearest horticulture place near you. We have the Morton Arboretum (Lisle, IL) you can send them a sample. They will identify and tell you how best to get rid of this plant and what the plant is. You can google them and they will help you.

Glysofate is a contact herbicide that leaves no residue in the soil. Its not soil active. Only kills live plants and seedling that it contacts. The weed looks like Leafy Spurge. Round-up should work and then you can plant within 7-14 days. Just read the lable of the product you buy before you use it. Good Luck.

Don't know its botannical name. It will develop orange blossoms. I have lots of it on my property. Locals call it butterfly weed. It will attract a wide variety of butterflies. My mother who grew up in Alabama called it chigger weed because it will be full of chiggers when it blooms. Very deep rooted and hearty plant.

I think the only way you are going to get rid of this thing (without harmful sprays) is to dig is up. But you have to make sure you have ALL of the root, if you do not, it will come back.

Michele C, it is not prickly. And Vivian it is not rue as it does not have any scent at all. Whatever it is, it is taking over in the yard! I will try the vinegar and salt solution and see if it works. Thanks you Patricia K for that suggestion. If that doesn't work, I will try te Ortho-Max although I would rather go the organic route. Thank you all for the info and suggestions.

Seriously? How well does this work? I'd love to use an alternative to Roundup. I'm kind of laughing, tho - bet it smells like salad after you treat the weeds.

It looks like it's in the pea family. You don't need to use cancer causing pesticides, unless you don't care about cancer, some don't. Just use a hoe, people have been using hoes for millennia with no ill effects.

I have the same weeds in my yard / gardens . I dig up what I can and use ortho weed killer on the root under the ground . works great !! I used the boiling water trick , works good on shallow rooted weeds not the deep rooted ones.

Does it have a flower? easier to identify if it does..Please people DO NOT use chemicals in the garden, they leach into our water supply and are not safe if you have small children and animals.

Don't know if it has a flower, we just moved to the area and it may be too early for a flower. Time will tell. It is definitely not wild sweet pea, as I have those too! And the plant itself does not smell like anything although I don't know if the flowers will if it indeed does have a flower.

Put white vinegar in a spray bottle and spray them as the start to grow it all kill the root in a few days.

Not sand spirs. I will try the vinegar, but I'll need to buy a lot of gallons of the stuff as these weeds are everywhere.....lol! Thank you all for your suggestions, I even asked one of the locals and they had no idea what they were.

Jamie M, it is not spurge, it grows upright. Lespedeza is really close and if that's what is is then I might as well pack up my house and move as this stuff is everywhere...lol. Not only is it growing from old roots but now I'm noticing 100's of babies coming up from seed. Thank you all for all your responses.
