Personally I like hardwood and accent rugs. It brings so many possibilities with it. With carpet one is stuck with what is there, and area rugs 'creep'. My personal preference, also hardwood is timeless. Remember the shag rug?
  • I think it really depends on the room and the conditions. I used carpet in the bedrooms. I love hardwoods too but the dogs are hard on them.

Carpet is a) appropriate for budgets and b) much appreciated in bedrooms! That being said? If I had no budget? I would have hardwoods wall to wall and own a lot of slippers :)

I'm removing all carpet on the second first floor. I will replace the carpet on the second floor where all the bedrooms are.

I don't like carpet. I love my hardwoods and it drives me crazy when people pull up carpet and find hardwood underneath.

I was amazed by how quite our master bedroom became after new carpet was installed. No creaks from boards and it's soft and warm on my feet. I sometimes like to lay flat on the carpet as well. With wooden floors, it gets cold, noisy, and can help generate echoes in a decent sized room. It's also prone to expansion and contraction. Also has more physical maintenance required and is more expensive to keep looking good. After shopping for carpet for our master bedroom, I must say that I was astounded by the colors, patterns and finishes of carpet. I don't think it's going anywhere, anytime soon, especially considering it's the cheapest flooring option, usually.

I agree, something nice and 'woolly' on a bedroom floor is great. But they do make large area rugs, I have one of them in our bedroom. I also park my slippers right next to my bed, just in case I have to go further.

We took out all the carpeting the first day we moved into our house. We have rugs in places where we want something soft like the bedrooms and living room. Wall to wall carpeting is not suitable for people with allergies or asthma. It's so much easier to keep floors clean w/o carpeting.

No carpet for me. Only hardwood, not laminate, floors. Tile in bathrooms. Tile in kitchen is fine but I personally prefer the continuous look of hardwood. If I had carpet at all it would only be in kid's bedroom, but can always put a rug over hardwood.

I agree with Nancy. I finally got a house with all original hardwood I thought I wanted. First I bought a runner for the hall, then an area rug for the living room then one for my den. Now I am sweeping all the edges and vacuuming all the carpets. We even put a high end dark laminate downstairs and every single footprint shows. This is just my opinion and now I believe in"be careful what you wish for". Your post is quite old, can you tell us what you did?

My house was wall to wall tile. It was very cold in the bedrooms and I didn't like the bare floors in the closets because if an article of clothing falls it gets dirty. I opted to carpet the bedrooms

Remove! If you have ever seen the filth that resides under even the best-cared-for carpet in the cleanest home, you will never have carpet again. Also, if anyone in the home has allergies to dust mites, having hard surface floors is a must.

I agree with Dorma. No carpet!!!! They can not be cleaned. My mom had carpet in her house, had it cleaned every three months. She decided to pull it up and OMG. That's all I will say. NO CARPET!!!!!!

I live in Florida, and I opted to remove all builder's carpet from the entire house. I had laminate flooring installed in the dinning room and living room and hallways. Then I chose vinyl flooring which was a close match to the wood laminate and had it installed in all of the other rooms and chose another in a tile pattern to coordinate with the tile flooring in the foyer and entrance hall. It was perfect! Cleaning is so much easier now that I can use a damp mop to do the cleaning. Last Christmas, I got a Roomba to handle the laminate floors and a mopping Roomba for all the other floors. The floor cleaning now is a breeze! Since I have a very bad back, this is one chore I can just let the robots do it. And BTW, flooring was put in the closets too.

Carpet is a dust magnet, no matter how frequently it gets shampooed. I have hardwood, which us timeless and can always be dressed up with scatter rugs. Folks with allergies might really not gave carpet in their homes.

I wouldn't any carpet in my home if I had a choice and was able to replace it. Beige in bedrooms is all I have left now. I would have hardwood or tile and then purchase nice area rugs for where ever I wanted the softness. If you've ever cleaned your carpets yourself, you'll know why. Oh so dirty, even when they look clean.
