Is a multi-generational home a selling point now...yet?

Question

We are planning to finish our basement soon with my mother and mother-in-law in mind. Plans inlcude a full bathroom with walk-in shower, living space, kitchen, and universal fixtures throughout. There are two walk-outs in the basement area. Will this be a good selling point in the future or a drawback? Suggestions to consider?

beats a lot of money spent on assisted living space....that is if you and the inlaws / parents can tolerate each other close company.

I heard a joke a while back which follows many family views.

It can be....you should contact several of the real estate agents operating in your market and get some opinions.  I think for most it will be a good selling point but don't expect a 100% payback on the investment.  At the end of the day, you're doing this for family reasons....if the space is well planned & executed, it should help you sell down the road.

My mom lives with us and we added on/remodeled a space for her. Remember to make the doors wide enough for a wheel chair or a walker. Also we put in a shower, that has a flat floor, nothing to step over. Our realtor told us that we would easily get our money back.

In Canada it is...Especially if you do it in a way, that future buyers could simply rent it out if they want. ie: blend in grab bars, make it look high end and bright rather than institutional.
