Stone Soup Flower Boxes

It's easy to bring neighbors together and beautify your environment at the same time!
The Bridge Boxes were an idea I had been thinking about for several years. Finally, in the Summer of 2014, I mentioned the idea to my next-door neighbor, and two days later, he had built the boxes. Notice how he used planks to secure the boxes so we didn't have to drill any holes into county property. There are also identical planks on the back, so the boxes simply slip onto the bridge rails.
My husband, who is a farmer, brought home some nice, composted soil and I painted the boxes red and the planks gray to match the bridge metal. Another neighbor, who was excited about the idea and wanted to be included, contributed some flowers and helps me to keep them watered and dead-headed.
All three families can see the boxes from our homes and yards, and the passers-by often stop to chat and admire the boxes when we are out tending them. This was a true, Stone Soup Project and we hope to see more bridge boxes this year on other local bridges in our rural town. Entire cost? About $30.00 for flowers.
