A roof rat question

Since our roof was sealed off the roof rat family has moved to the backyard to feast on the bird feeder residue. I cannot stop feeding the birds; but that's another discussion. How do I trap the roof rats without catching the squirrels or the chipmunks?

Rats make 2 holes. A quick enterance and a quicker exit. Maintaining the lawn, grass, weeds is important. Keep the area clean to prevent rodent harborage. That should help some. Rats don't like their feet wet. Keep the mulch moist. Your neighbors probably have a rat problem too. Rats carry many health hazards associated infestations diseases to humans and animals. Good Luck!
  • If your yard and now home is no longer harboring them and they seem to still be around. Call your local health office and have them come around and check for possible sites where they are living. They can have local animal control remove them. If you have areas such as sheds or barns that they can burrow under to protect themselves you need professional assistance with proper baits and trapping systems. Not to expensive but will remove the issue quite fast.

Thank you for the suggestions but this doesn't answer my question because the question was not answered.
  • The answer is simple, you cannot. The traps do not know the difference between one or the other. Placement of the trap may limit the amount of wrong critters that you catch. Perhaps a live trap and then decide once its caught if you want to release it or not. But you should make a trip to the local health office if they are a real issue and not in your own home.
