If you are referring to fungus gnats or fruit flies you will have to spray the soil and leaves down with an insecticidal soap.Make sure your trays under neath are periodically washed out as the flies produce many eggs.

We had the same problem in our apartment and a friend recommended adding more basil to the array of herbs on the window sill as a natural fly repellent, and it made the situation a lot better. We grew basil in a few places, between all of the other herbs.

@BONNIE J I have two large pot (14" and larger)s in the house during the winter for my cats. They love it almost as much as catnip. Just remember that it goes dormant and should not be thrown ot when it goes brown. It will start growing again around march. It also makes a great tea and flavoring for soups.

To add to my comment insecticidal soap is not harmful to human consumption.I would not give advise unless I knew what I was talking about.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I have now purchased mint, oregano, Rosemary, coriander, basil and parsley. They are all displayed nicely n my spare bedroom window.
