The air gap ("overflow") is clogged and not working properly. this is pretty common. I'm not sure about where you live because codes are different but here they now allow us to remove the over flow and loop the dishwasher up behind the sink higher than the disposer and this will definitely stop this from happening. You can put a soap dispenser or something where the air gap was. If codes do not permit you to do this then you will need to replace or clean out the air gap

part of the drain is half stop up with food parts take the u trap out and clean it and check the drain going in to wall to see if it free of food parts
  • It is a Code in California to have an airgap. Make sure that the 5/8" dishwasher discharge hose to the airgap, the airgap itself and the 7/8" return hose to the disposer is free of debris and not kinked. It is likely caused by any one of these issues.
