Hi! I was very fortunate to score 2 of these gorgeous frames for free a little over a year ago. They have been hanging on my dining room wall for about 7 months, empty :( I could not figure out what to put in them. They are an odd size... So when a group I am a part of posted a DIY ART month, I knew I needed to tackle these :)
I wanted a large family picture in one of them, but I could not find a print to canvas that was the right size. I brainstormed and FINALLY came up with an idea. I love Chevron print so I wanted to incorporate that, and Shutterfly offered me a free 11x16 print at just the right time :) Thanks Shutterfly!!!! So I had a lot of 1/4 inch plywood, so I cut it to fit the frame. I drew on my chevron print and used my dremmel tool to carve out the lines.
It was tough keeping the lines straight.
I then outlined with tape where the photo would be and put on a coat of my vinegar stain to darken the wood.
I lined up my photo, a practice run and lightly marked with a pencil where the photo would sit, than way when I applied my clear and then dark wax, it would not interfere with the mod podge, I used to secure the photo in place. You can see how light the carved lines were. I needed them to pop some more, so they gave the appearance of individual pieces of wood.
I covered up to my pencil mark in clear wax, after dry I applied my dark wax and wiped off, making sure it caught in all of my lines. Then I used my antique mod podge and secured my photo onto the wood. I taped it off so that the mod podge would not get onto the wood too much, I did not want to be able to see a line where the wax and mod podge met.
Next I fit and secured my wood into the back of my frame with staples in the corners.
One frame got a sconce, that we already owned, and some pretty burlap flowers in it :)
And this is how the family pic turned out :) I love the way it looks :)
Now I love the way my dining room gallery wall looks :)
