Planting perennials in pots

I'm short on space in my yard and am wondering if perennials can be planted in large pots? We have cold winters here in the Midwest, will they have the right amount of soil and temps to go dormant?
Thank you.

I have a climbing hydrangea in a big pot on my deck and it comes back beautifully every year.I also have 2 arborvitae in pots in the front of the house and they are doing great too. Over 15 years ago I planted petunias in my garden and now they come up all over the place even in the pots that I planted with the hydrangea and arborvitae.

I don't think there is a hard and pat answer. It depends on the perennial and the size of the pot. Certainly the bigger the better.
