First are you changing the colors in the room and the existing furniture?
    • Kristen Kristen on May 07, 2016
@Janet Pizaro Colors are staying the same - just got it painted.... Existing furniture is going as soon as I find something new.

How much is the budget for the room? What must staying in the room and the most important what colours do you find relaxing? Do you need a bed or would a sectional sofa be OK for napping.
    • Kristen Kristen on May 07, 2016
@Jean Myles Budget is maybe $1,000. Only thing staying is the curtains and TV.... Sectional could work..

Cozy doesn't always mean dark. It means comfort, relaxation, warmth and calming. Think colors that relax you...maybe neutrals or earth tones? Seascape colors? Think about your "happy place " and work off those feelings!

If you have an IKEA near you, they have great furniture and it's nice quality. And they definitely have pink items!

First of all, only YOU know what kind of a "feel" you like. Is this solely for you or is the family joining you too. If it's all yours, then think of what YOU like. Do you prefer shabby chic or perhaps, a country feel or a zen-ish or maybe the Hampton look. Pin pictures of rooms that appeal to you & in time, you'll see you lean towards a certain style. Look at rooms on Houzz as well. I have B. Moore "Ranchwood" in my main living area and B. Moore "Rockies Brown" in bathrooms. While I've always loved aqua (since the late 50's) I sadly find it too common now so I use it in one bedroom. For the living room, I found various cushions (& a throw) in an icy silver/blue & brown & just love them! It's a nice change from everyone else! Another unexpected color that looks sophisticated with that dark brown (we both seem to have) is a greyed-down lavender. I'm not referring to a pastel "bridesmaid-look" baby lavender but a muted lilac color. I discovered that quite by accident ... making the bed with clean sheets, I grabbed lavender pillow cases instead of medium brown one night & love the combo! So in a nutshell, decide on your style then play with color! Don't be in a hurry; take your time so you don't regret impulse purchases.

@Elaine No need to apologize - colors show up different on different screens.. I want to buy everything new for the space and measuring it first is a great idea. We got a massive sectional for living room and it is really too big for the space.

Me again, Kristen ... I just saw your question about the sofa blending in with the panelling. On my screen, the panelling looks a creamy white. I don't think your sofa will blend in as you'll have cushions, etc. which will add interest. You haven't given any room sizes which brings up a thought. One tip: if you have a small room, having the sofa (or wood cabinet, etc) similar to the wall color, will make the sofa/cabinet/etc. recede, thus making the room look roomier. If you want something to "stick out" or "advance" more, then choose a different color than the wall color. Just a little hint you can consider or not! :)

The cream sofa will be great as it won't "visually advance" into the room but blend better with the panelling, however, it will still make a nice impact with cushions & pretty throw. (Are your walls black, then, & not chocolate brown?) If you had a dark sofa, it would visually advance in the room, as it would contrast more with the white panelling. Picture a woman in a black dress standing in front of a white wall - her body silhouette will stand out MUCH more in a black dress than if she were dressed in a white dress. Same principle applies in decor. Maybe you can find some cushions that go with your nice drapes. The pattern does NOT have to match. You could buy two solids, then two stripes or chevrons or even florals. Then if you see one nice lumbar type (those narrow/horizontal type ones) that would look nice in the center of the sofa. If you need a coffee table, how about a glass top? Again, visually it takes up less room & is barely noticeable or maybe you'd prefer a cushy ottoman with a tray on top. Or nesting tables that sit off to the side of the sofa - they are great in a small room as you only pull them out when needing a tabletop. Ceramic Garden stools are great too; I have one from 40 years ago & see them all the time at HomeSense (Home Goods in US.). If you have room, one or two chairs, perhaps in a subtle print that repeats the colors of the cream sofa, wall color, drapes, etc. I love decorating, as you probably can tell & wish I was there! If you stick to neutrals, you can change the colors of the cushions, bowl, vases, throw with the season. For Summer, maybe you like aqua or green accessories & then change to say, orange for the Fall. If cushions are difficult to store, maybe you can buy some material & make the very easy "envelope-style" cushion covers (go to Pinterest) then you just slip covers off according to the Season. Have fun!

So that's a good start . What colour makes you feel calm and relaxed? You can use that colour/ colours for accents, what about some art work. Do you need a stand for the TV or could it be hung on the wall ? What kind of a desk do you need to do your work? Do you need a bookcase or some other kind of storage . A 2 drawer file can also double as a side table. Can you get another curtain panel The one there now looks skimpy /not full enough.
    • Kristen Kristen on May 10, 2016
@Jean Myles Right now I'm working at the kitchen counter on a bar stool... LOL!!! I work better when I am comfy -- maybe a comfy arm chair and ottoman? The curtain is out of stock, but hope it'll be available soon... Definitely want a new stand / buffet for the TV like the one attached. A side table with a lamp would be great - just not sure of style... like a modern / shabby chic combo.

Never paint walls with high gloss paint! They reflect any little bit of light. The dark color on the top half of the wall is too contrasted with the white wainscoting. It makes the room appear cut in half.

I love her paint choice. Warm and elegant. For the curtain I would pick a texture, like a slubby "silk" instead of the geometric. Or a subtle stripe.

. You have all that wonderful wainscoting and that curtain, though handsome, completely distracts, and even fights the architectural details. In fact, I'd wait til last to choose the curtain. Get your furniture and pillows and artwork. Then choose which color to highlight on your window.

I agree on cream, sofa, wall sconce shades, some cream paint on the trim and wainscoting and curtains. Cream colored desk and chair for work( but work in an escape room?). A new small fireplace.
  • Kristen Kristen on Feb 10, 2017

I've taken your advice and given up on doing any work in that room. Now it is solely for watching tv and storing clean clothes from dryer until I put them up. LOL

  • Kristen Kristen on Feb 25, 2017

I'm adding another curtain so maybe if it's "scrunched" a bit it won't be so overwhelming. If it is, I'll change it out.

I need furniture ideas (sofa? love seat? chaise? color)!
