What's wrong with my poor oak tree?

Hi all. I don't have a picture right now, but wanted to know if anyone knew what is ailing my poor oak tree. My tree is over run with large round balls that are spikey. I think they are a type of fungus, but is there any way to treat it? The entire tree has it and would love to save it, if possible. Any ideas?

It sounds like they may be galls, which are caused by insects. See the description and more info here: http://hyg.ipm.illinois.edu/pastpest/200704g.html

Thank you. I believe you are right. The pictures in this article look just like what is on my tree. Unfortunately, my very large tree is covered in them. Sigh....

I don't think they are much of a threat to your tree, Alissa, however unsightly they may be.
