How can I disguise a second exterior door?

I have an unused door on the front of my house that I want to disguise. It leads into a den, but we don't use that door. It makes the front of the house look like a duplex. I need some ideas.

If the area is large enough you can put potted plants in the front of the door.

I'd paint the unused door the same color as the home's exterior, and paint the main door in a different, clear statement color. Then, big bold address numbers on the main door, either stenciled on or purchased contrasting color metal or wood.

Following up on Janet's suggestion for plants, I'd first frame out a trellis to go over the unused door and casing you've painted to blend and disappear into the background. Then you can have climbing plants or tall, spiky ones in pots and urns. With the framed trellis (painted the same color as the house and door) It will all look purposefully designed. .

I agree with contactkch-reg. you could put a waterproof hardboard on that door and paint that 'niche' in a nice bright color, then fastened a rack to it and plant some grimping roses or passionflower or so in front of it. Or a vertical garden, or a some artwork in wrought iron.

Bring the exterior color of your home right over the door and door way. I'd then put up a nice plant stand with some potted annuals and a chair and make it into an outdoor reading spot or a place to have coffee. I wouldn't completely remove the door as the next owner may want to have a den entrance in addition to the main entrance.

If you can get some matching siding, I would remove the door, add some studs, a piece of plywood, tyvex waterproofing and then your siding, repaint to match the house. Then on the inside add insulation, a piece of drywall, mud it, sand and paint to match the room.
