European Over the Sink Dish Drainer

Ever since I was in England over a decade ago, I've wanted one of the dish drainers which hangs over the sink. I see them in Pinterest but haven't found a place to order them, and couldn't afford to buy one anyway. So here is my attempt to create one. Just moved into this lovely old house and haven't done much yet. I have very limited countertop space so this was a priority for me. I hung one of the wire baskets from Home Depot over my sink and I love it. I may do more to make it more attractive in time, but it is so functional and frees up valuable counter space. The dishes dry so fast because they are high and not close to the water the way they would be on a dish drainer on the counter. When I use a cup or plate, etc it is so quick to get them washed and up. On the walls you will see some different paint samples. I haven't found the right color yet. I think I may need to paint a large section of wall white and try them again. The peachy color on the existing walls is making it hard for me. I want to use gray and white and concrete for the countertop but so far all the grays are too light or too dark, etc. they actually look better in this photo than in real light, lol. All comments or suggestions are welcome.

  • Wire basket from Goodwill. They can be purchased from Home Depot.

    Can your neighbors see this?

Love this idea. Saw same in Egypt! Their kitchens aren't "pretty" they are functional. Unfortunately I have cabinets over my sink and a wide space where faucet is. Any suggestions as to how I could still use a shelf like this?

So the water from the dishes drain onto the window sill and the space behind the sink? I'm confused. Is the basket mounted out from the window so it drains over the sink?

That is rather confusing, lol, but I appreciate your answer. I ended up painting with the first gray on the left and it is wonderful. Tried it in all the rooms in different lighting conditions and it was the only one that looked good everywhere.

It's funny you said you used the first one. I just found your post on HomeTalk and I was going to say I liked the first gray on the left, too! LOL Great minds. Love your over the sink dish rack idea, too.
