How to Run and Maintain an Outdoor Water Fountain

After a few years of having a fountain, I'm finally confidant in sharing how to run and maintain an outdoor water fountain. It has been a trial and error type thing but it doesn't have to be for you. Get all my secrets with this how-to!
Outdoor water fountains are cute or can be cute (and relaxing) if you take care of them. With just a bit of maintenance and care, you can sit back on your patio and enjoy a nice, clean water fountain.
First off, I'd definitely recommend using a fountain cover during the months that you aren't using your fountain. See the one we use here. I'd definitely recommend it.

Ok, so what do you do if you have a fountain that looks like this? Well, the first thing you need to do is scoop all the disgusting water and junk out. You can tilt it to get it out but be careful, because fountains like this are super heavy. If you can't tilt it, then use a bucket and get to scooping.
Once you get all the debris out, use a bristle brush with soapy water and start scrubbing. For really tough stains, we use the concentrated Simple Green cleaner.
Next, decide what pump to use (see what we use in our blog post). Things to consider: electric or solar, pumping power (height), etc.
Once a week, add a drop or two of fountain cleaner directly to the fountain.
Sit back and enjoy your fountain.

Having a resin fountain that I bring inside for winter, I am curious how to keep the water from turning green in the summer . It is in direct sunlight most of day and the birds love it, so I need to keep the water safe for them.
