How do I get rid of grasshoppers?

Every summer around this time I notice small light green grasshoppers jumping around/away when I water my plants (hostas, flowers etc. NOT vegetable or fruit plants). After awhile these grasshoppers get bigger and bigger. Probably because they are eating my plants. How do I get rid of them and keep them from eating my plants? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Sorry I didn't take any pics.

All of my gardens and plants are being devoured by grasshoppers. Sevin dust does not work. Does anyone know how to kill them, I prefer a green method.

They are leaving dirt piles and holes all over my lawn. I have tried to drown them, but they are still here and digging.
