Hollow core doors!

Help! I have hollow core doors that are basically boring! Would love to add panelling to them but they are fire doors and they will be checked by our building inspector soon so doubt its a good idea. I've started whitewashing them for a rustic look but not sure I like it. Any other paint ideas or inspiration please!

You could just get some thin molding and make either squares or rectangles which would give them the look of 3,4,or 6 panel doors (depending on the size and placment of the "panels") You can also paint the trim a different color OR you can paint the inside a different color which will give you a different look. It would be a very reasonable project.

I didn't think a hollow core COULD be a fire door. But yes, it is easy to get thin molding, like quarter round, glue ( construction or liquid nails. Then a light tape to temp. Hold ) stain or paint. Lots of ideas for door panels. Have fun.

Also can find wood picture frames you can glue on.

mirrors, molding, paint the edge a contrasting color, photo collage, blackboard paint, and the other comment about fire doors is correct. fire doors must be solid core.

I also never heard of hollow core doors being fire doors. Generally fire doors are metal or fire rated wood panels with a plaster type material sandwiched between the panels. If these indeed are fire doors, the only thing is you can paint them and it has to be special fire rated paint that has silica powder incorporated in it.. Anything else you do to the doors would be a violation by limiting their fire rating.

I had hollow core doors in my last house. I found some cheap wood frames in the same size and glued them to the door for some interest.

Thanks! Some great ideas, stencil and mirrors are good ideas. Should have stated in UK. Unfortunately fire doors here are either ply hollow or panelled and expensive and required through out a property with a loft conversion so trying to cut costs but not finish. Definitely going to suggest the thin moulding too. Thanks

In the trades as carpenter eover 30 yrs. you cannot use hollow core doors for fire protection.

Perhaps they're not strictly hollow as filled with something but they are ply like hollow core and definitely fire doors as I had them fitted last week due to regulations in the uk

UK probably has different codes than USA.
