I was looking at the very high end Samsung washer/dryers - what do you think? Worth it? Is it worth splurging on the hi-tech appliances?

how do they do with shirts? I want something that will, well, not make my shirts wrinkly.
  • We found the Appliance 411 website had some helpful information: http://bit.ly/b0Re4f There are only a limited number a major appliance manufacturers left in the marketplace. Over the years, the big ones have bought up the smaller ones and merged those product designs into their own product lines. They now produce products under the various brand names they own. Often there is only cosmetic differences in the appearance of the appliance, while the underlying mechanical workings are very similar, if not the same. The manufacturers warranty may also differ between brands and models.

Mysister loves her front load appliances, says they were worth every penny. If you can wait long enough, Momorial Day d could hold twice as much clothes.Sales, will be right around the corner. Also, I have found HHGregg stores to have best prices on high end appliances.

I bought the Samsung set and hate it. It does not clean my clothes, has a bad smell and is expensive. If I had to do it over again I would buy the large old fashion washer, where you can see the laundry agitate. None of those new systems. How can laundry get clean with that little water? And how can it rinse all the soap out? My towels have a very ugly smell.
  • We purchased LG appliances and are very happy with them. However if your building from scratch, appliance manufactures should be low on the list of items. What is real important is layout and design. You can have the best of the best, and with a poor layout or design. They all end up like garbage. The biggest concern is install design. Some of the higher end units have special requirements that no other type of similar appliances have. Meaning if you decide later to use another brand, either because your not happy with your choice or style. You may be stuck with that unit as the rest require different types of connections, or may not properly fit in openings that you had done. So in retrospect be sure that you make sure that what ever you end up going with, will be a standard type of size and install so changing out later if need be can be headache free. Also price has a lot to do with purchase issues. You can get a fridge for $300 or $10,000. They all do the same thing, but it depends upon features you want and will use and also size. Regardless of what you purchase you will find both negative and positive responses about that item. Its just based upon ones own opinion of the appliance and their own ability to understand how to properly operate and maintain it. Check with consumers to see what they have to say about what ever it is your leaning towards. Take Elli V. She does not like here front loaders. For several reasons. However I can find just as many folks who simply love them. Good luck with this.
  • I have the Samsung set and love it! They are on my second floor and do not vibrate and I have them stacked. Has a huge capacity too. And it has a steam option - gets the wrinkles out. When I do shirts, I just take them out right away but if I forget, the steam option works well.

Elli V., do you have front loaders? One of my girlfriends bought new front loaders, an expensive set, and has had issues with odor in her clean clothes. She has had several servicemen out to look at them, and has learned from them that the front loaders do not always empty every drop of water out of the tub. Consequently, mold and mildew can grow in the tub. She was advised to run a heavy concentrate of bleach through the wash cycle once a week to prevent the odor. For that reason, I refuse to own a front loader. Modern technology has come a long way with top loaders these days.

GE Profile. My cousin who has worked on washer appliances recommended them by far. Love my set. He also said Whirlpool for dishwasher and Frigidaire for refrigerator. Have been pleased. Be sure to watch over the work being done on your dishwasher. We had a tough beginning as our repairman showed up nuts bolts and screws and all kinds of debris in our washer. We did not believe him and still believe he sabotaged our dishwasher. He put in a new motor and watched him like a hawk. All that was probably 6 years ago and no problems since. Rusted nuts bolts and screws could not possibly have gotten in our dishwasher as careful as I am.

i would personally do this because of the energy efficiency and possible tax credits if you buy the right appliances. i dont know what to recommend but i would check around and see if they have those programs in your area, going efficient and green can save you money especially when starting from scratch!

I have never owned a front load washer because I have heard too many horror stories about the mildew and "dirty sock" smells! You can get a very nice washer and dryer for a lower price and use the difference to splurge on kitchen appliances. By splurge I don't mean ridiculous, but rather reasonable and sharp like the S.S. French Door fridge, S.S. 6 burner/double oven stove, and a nice dishwasher. The key is to put the money in what is used and seen most in your home. Face it, if people are coming over to see your expensive washer and dryer and your cheap over/under fridge and knock off stove, they will not have a good first impression...lol...just remember, buy with your head you are the one that has to live with the decisions. Good luck!

I have Kenmore front loader washer and dryer. I love them. But it did take some time to learn how to wash in them. I extended the wash time (mine has a "soil" setting) and it does great. It also has a "self Clean" setting that I do often (as per the manual). When the washer is not in use I take the soap draw out and always leave the door open and have not had a problem with odors at all. I have had it a year and half now. They run so quiet, If laundry room door is closed I can't hear them at all. This set replaced an 70s dryer and LG top loader from the 90's my electric bill went down after installing the new set.

  • Cindy R Cindy R on May 08, 2012
I had the GE Profile, but hated bending over to pull stuff in/out. And it's true you have to leave the washer door open. I recently bought a Kenmore Elite top load washer and a dryer. LOVE them due to capacity and flexibility of settings. Will never go back to front load washer and "high end" doesn't necessarily mean the "best." Many of these name brands are manufactured by the same company. I would check with "Consumer Reports" for a detailed breakdown on appliances.

We hated the front load washer. Hated the mold that formed around the seal...found out you have to leave the door open, which was hard to do since it was ibehind the closet doors. We now have the new top load no agitator, uses less water than a front load and love it.
  • Laurie G Laurie G on May 08, 2012
If you don't put your shirts in dryer, the Front loader washer has many options. But if you use the dryer< then you need to take shirts out right away.

Bought an LG front load set. I have dogs, so I have a lot of dog hair. These machines are terrible for that. You can't get the gaskets clean of all of the crud - especially below the gasket where you can't clean. I leave the door to the washer open so that it'll dry out between washes and I use the tub clean option frequently (wasting water) and even after that, there's still a smell. I've also found that now my clothes, especially sheets and blankets, have a really funky smell if left out and not used for a while. My white towels, even after being careful about not using too much detergent, are now beige(and I've used bleach, the extra rinse cycle, the extra water cycle and the heavily soiled cycle - all at the same time!). If you have something that's extra dirty, wash it separately. Because the machines use so little water, there really isn't enough water to make sure the dirt is cleaned out. If I had to do it again, I'd buy a top loader with plenty of water for the dog blankets, etc. My clothes used to be so clean and fresh smelling... I know the new machines supposed to save water, but I don't see how when I have to use all of the extra features to get the clothes clean and they still come out looking dirty.

After much research (Consumers Union, and others), and with the suggestion of the sales person at Sears, we purchased a top loader, "High Efficiency, low water wash technology" with the Kemore name badge (made by Frigidaire). Not a lot of bells and whistles BUT it does the job quite well at a reasonable price. All that I've read....top loaders are far more efficient than front loaders , just ot as popular

They have a product to kill mewdew for "front loaders". By "Tide".I started using once a wk, then once a month. WONDERFUL. I also have the drawers that they sit on. Lots of storage, and NO BENDING, life savers for my back and SO much storage for cleaning products.

As for other appliances, bought a new Maytag french door ref. last year and love it. No more bending over to get stuff out of the cold part - and the freezer has nice bins. Plenty of space to put pizza boxes in the cold part, lol. If you're going to go with a separate cooktop/oven, check out the induction cooktops. Cooks like gas, but uses electric. The pots get hot (you have to use metal) but the cooktop doesn't. I have one and LOVE it! Really nice for kids, the elderly and anyone who has cats, lol.

@ Laurie G - I tried the tub clean product made by Tide and found the smell of the product worse than the tub, lol! I only use products that are free of scents and dyes and the Tide product's smell was way too strong and wasn't even a pleasant smell - like perfume gone bad, lol...

I just got my first set of front loading washer and dryer and I love them. They are made by GE , a trusted name for many years. I went extra for the pedestals for extra storage and also I don't have to bend much to load and unload. This is a good feature for some with a bad back like me. They are energy efficient also and very quiet. I highly recommend. :)

Our front loader washes great. But we find you need to do a HOT WASH frequently (at least once a week??) or you will get an odor from the machine. If you routinely wash in cold or warm water, you never wipe out what may be growing in your machine.
  • Debi M Debi M on May 09, 2012
We looked for a while, with the same question you have. We looked at several brands and had decided we were going to buy a set when we found a good deal. One day we were at Lowe's when we saw a Maytag set of front loading machines that had been returned. I asked why and was told that the owner didn't like them. They were marked 50% off the regular price because they were "used" (previous owner had them for a week) We decided right then to buy them. Had them for almost two years now and I love them (the fact that they were only $1000. for the set with stands included didn't hurt)
  • Cindy P Cindy P on May 09, 2012
Yes, they are worth it. My parents bought them and their water and electricity bills have went down. Their dryer has a sensor that stops when the clothes are dry. You may put them in for 40 minutes but it may only take 15-20 minutes to dry them.
  • Vicki T Vicki T on May 09, 2012
We have the odor problem also and have to leave the door open all the time. I am putting a laundry on my main floor this year and think I will opt for the top load high efficiency model. I am going to go get the Tide mildew killer and give that a try as I plan to leave the basement set up as is so my Cousin has her own laundry area for her Daughter and herself.

  • Clay B Clay B on May 09, 2012
I don't think they are worth it, seems like the payback from any savings would be very long. I stick with the less expensive top load washers etc. Also, one of the big problems with these is the smell. People do wash, take the clothes out, and close the door. Moisture breeds odors. I have a top load, standard washer, I always leave the lid open when not in use, lets it dry out. Never had an odor issue. I would think with front loaders, leave the door cracked open a bit, so it can dry out.
  • Sherrie S Sherrie S on May 09, 2012
I now have a Whirlpool front end loader and have never experienced an odor problem. My only problem was I didn't know I needed a pedestal so I bought one. My previous Matag was also a front end loader and never had an odor and didn't need a pedestal because they designed it correctly.

    • @Felicity Woodruffe A pedestal is a small drawer unit that sets on the floor that the machine then sits on top of. They vary on how much higher they make the machine sit, but they do provide a place in which to store some cleaning items. Not big enough however to put a bottle of washer soap in however.

We have not had thie issue with smells or mold. Interesting how some do and some don't. Wonder if it is in the water? I.E. well water vs city water? I use cold water to wash all of my laundry so maybe temperature has something to do with it.
    • Felicity Woodruffe Felicity Woodruffe on Jun 07, 2014
@Debi M you hit the nail on its head, mold thrives in warm moist places and where more perfect than a nice warm damp machine with the door shut.Conditions heaven sent for mold.A cold rinse is perfect then when empty a quick wipe round the rubber parts with a dry cloth sorts the machine out.Mold only grows because the user hasnt made the connection that their action or lack of is providing the perfect conditions for it to flourish. Also people forget to clean out the filter on the washing machine.when we take a bath we dont just let the water out and leave the bath as it is, we clean it. so a quick wipe round all the rubber parts will keep your machines behaving and smelling good.

In England everyone uses front loaders always have done for the last 40 years, top loaders are very hard to find.To be honest I have never had a problem with any smells unless one of my children has done a wash and left the clothes in the machine overnight. But as with anything if you left it sitting for any amount of time with water in it then you will get a smell.Washing soda cystals do the job and mean you can use less soap saving you money, and if you do get a smell use some sterilising liquid or tablet like the sort for babies bottles or cleaning dentures its harmless and really cheap bleach is not nice. These machines are amazing, they sense eveything weight of laundry, type of laundry, you can steam the clothes just to freshen them up.You cam change the spin speed add more water, shorten the wash time put the machine on hold ,soak or pre wash, you can stop the machine or even change the cycle type part way through. They are quiet, economical to run and if you buy a warranty or service you never ever have to pay for repairs. They save water, use less soap, less electricity and some have a short wash as low as 14 minutes. Some like my Hoover products can hold a king size bed quilt and wash it efficiently,You can use them to just spin some items you have hand washed too,I used to have a Maytag set with a large paddle type agitator but it used to tangle the clothes into a tight mangled mess and never got enough water out it also caused the surface of woollens to get all fluffed up and worn in places. It was gas and the pilot light kept going out on the drier.Try puttting a handful of salt or soda crystals on a quick wash after use now and then, if you arent really vigilant you will get a build up of yuk around the rubber door seal so just wipe it each time you use so its as dry as possible and you wont have a problem, Good luck.

Are you going for the WOW impress your guests factor? If so, there are plenty of high end, high tag products out there. But at the end of the day, the machines still just wash your clothes, dishes, etc...If it were me, I would put the higher end pieces in my kitchen...SS sub zero fridge, Viking 6 burner, etc...and stay simpler with the washer and dryer. But I live fairly humble, so do what pleases you. :) I use a top load washer and dryer. It is important to run an empty cycle on hot with heavy bleach, through you washer twice a month to prevent smells and bacteria. Also wipe out the dryer with a bleach rag when you do the washer, and leave both open to dry for 30 minutes.
  • Sherrie S Sherrie S on Jun 07, 2014
The pedestal is an option. Mine is 15" high. Without it I would have to kneel on the floor to put clothes in the washer. I think some handy people on Hometalk made their own pedestals. It is a great washer but the pedestal is a necessity @Felicity Woodruffe.

I have a Samsung washer, dryer and fridge. They are 2 1/2 yrs. old and the icemaker has quit. I never thought about it at the time, but the filter for the fridge is $40 and it's supposed to last 6 months, but actually does about 3. That can be expensive. I got the washer/ dryer for the stainless steel inside. They work fine. It's an extra large tub and I forgot how short I am (5'). I have to tip toe to get things out of the washer. It' great to hold a lot of bedding. It's a top loader and I wouldn't have any other. We are always forgetting or finding something extra that needs to go in the washer and you can't add it if you have a front loader. The fridge has a water dispenser inside and the freezer is on the bottom. It holds about as much as the chest freezer I had. It also has an alarm beep to let you know the doors are not closed completely, which is nice. They are still not top of the line, but I am happy. I am NOT happy with the kitchen range. It's a Maytag and the gas burners have flames that are much higher on a side. No one knows how to fix it. Next one will have one of those smaller ovens above the bigger bottom one. Oh, to start over with enough money!
    • Therese C Therese C on Jun 28, 2014
@F P Spillers I, too, had a side by side with ice/water through the door. My grandson has alergys, and when I found out how much mold and bacteria can form in them, I freaked out! The appliance is gone and I now have gone back to an over under. As for you high on one side flame, my mother had the same problem and called a repairman... 3 times! He finally got it right. The gas flow to the burner itself had become "sooted" inside where you cannot see it. He turned off the gas, removed the burner, then the silver strip that goes from back to front under the burners (under the stove top), took a pipe cleaner, and GENTLY pushed it through each hole. Voila! Even flames again! The flames should be blue with maybe a hint of yellow to show the gas is flowing smoothly. If the flames get lopsided again, it is most likely 'sooting' up again. Hope this helps! If you are afraid to try this on your own, have a repairman do it. They love to keep having to come back...it racks them up money and you will see you could have done it yourself all along. Just make sue you TURN OFF THE GAS and BLEED the burners out.(bleeding is to turn off the gas, light the burners and allow them to just die out.)

I bought a top of the line GE front loader & dryer, had nothing but problems. After 1 1/2 years I replaced both washer and dryer.I got a top loader from Whirlpool and matching dryer. No complains at all. I can't remember how many times I had repairmen out on the front loader. In fact, they kept claiming the problem was with the dryer on their paper work because they had been out so many times on the washer. I would specify washer but their paperwork always said dryer. Little trick of the trade I guess, getting too close to the 7 times Lemon law. No more GE products for us. I guess you just have to take a chance and hope you get lucky. Our standards have really gone down in this country, or probably just too many Chinese parts and products.
    • Pete Wells Pete Wells on Dec 26, 2014
@Barjkee GE doesn't get good reviews from Consumer Reports on washers & dryers, my experience with them has been similar..it was washers from Kenmore I had trouble with, I still have the dryer, a BOTL model that has performed flawlessly...I see GE still makes toploads with mechanical controls and no door lock, but their frequency-of-repair record eliminated them from my choices...so now I'm happy with the dryer, and have had no trouble with a used Whirlpool top load washer...if I ever buy another new washer, it will be a front-load..since the washer and dryer have their own rooms, they don't really have to match...

I had the Neptune Maytag washer & dryer for over 15 years. When it broke the replacement parts were more expensive then a new Whirlpool front end load washer. The Whirlpool doesn't have 15 or 20 settings which I didn't want or need. It does not have any bad smell and it cleans the clothes. I've had it about 3 years and I like it. Just a side note: One thing the appliance vendor suggested I should never do is use liquid softener in any clothes washer.

Samsung has been having problems for a long time. I would recommend a Whirlpool duet. My husband and I had an appliance business for a very long time. This brand had the least problems. Whirlpool makes Maytag now and GE is owned by another company. Bosch is the best appliance but they don't make the full size washer and dryer. Hope this helps.

Stay away from LG and Samsung, unless you know someone who will work on them. I had major problems finds someone to repair them. I had a whirlpool front loaders, loved it and never had a problem, the worked for 15 yrs and then I left them with house. Bought LG and it smelled, grew mildew even when I cleaned once a week with bleach and left the door open to dry. Also they say they will clean 15 pairs of jeans at once, who would do that, you wash with a small amount of water and you are just washing dirt into your clothes. Keep your loads small. My LG keep breaking down, I got rid of it after 7 yrs with it. I now have a whirpool top loader that is an HE. Still need to do smaller loads because of the limit of water it uses. My husband works on a flight line and really gets dirty and sweaty. We do small loads. Can"t seem to get enough water to wash a king size quilt. Need to do 2 washes with it Usually the people that have the front loaders, do not care about the smell or mold or how their clothes smell. Good luck.

  • Marcella J. Curtis Marcella J. Curtis on Feb 13, 2024

I personally wouldn't have a front load washer just for the fact that it gets mold around the rubber seal and it stains and you can't get to a lot of the mold unless you do a complete frontal tear down (I've seen it done) and I honestly don't think it would be worth the trouble.

  • My LG washer/dryer have (knock on wood) been terrific. Our high tech Samsung is the worst fridge I’ve had, KitchenAid the nicest though all door ice machines have major problems. Bosch is the very best range I’ve ever had and I am a fan of their dishwashers. Personally I think the over-tech of appliances is too much but I do see the appeal.
