Need help cleaning city-owned garbage cans

The city provides our garbage cans and the men that take them to the street and back to the house. We seldom get the same cans back, so we quit cleaning them. However, there are times flies will take over the cans and the area they are stored. Is there any thing I can spray on the cans or in them to stop this from happening? I considered bug spray, but, I was wondering about maybe bleach or vinegar. Thanks.

There are fly traps available that you can stick on the garbage cans.

@Janet Pizaro Thanks, however, the cans belong to the city. Can't put anything on them like that.

I think the easiest way would be to use the garden hose first to clean it out, use a spray bottle with bleach solution or ammonia, BUT NEVER USE THE TWO TOGETHER!, let it sit for a while then dump out. Leave the lid open until fairly dry. This should at least cut down on some or most of the leftover gunk and smell that attracts flies.

@Cheryl Gyles If the cans belonged to me I would do this. We don't always get the same cans week after week. Thanks anyway.
