DIY screened in deck??

We'd love to screen in our deck but can't afford it. We were thinking about using metal pipes and just buying the replacement mesh screen replacement cloth at a Home Depot/Lowe's. Has anyone done something like this or know where I could find the mesh fabric?? Thx!

Sounds OK but what are you going to use for the top (roof)? For the mesh fabric I would inquire at your local fabric store. If they don't carry it they might be able to order it for you. Or check on line . Good luck with your project and pls. Share your finished sunroom when your done.

Lowes and home depot carry screen. You may need to order wider pieces. In Fl they use screen on top too. They use a metal frame but I dont know why wood wouldnt work pull it tight

Screw 2x2'' strips of wood top to bottom across the open spans on your porch, then staple role of screen material between, all around the porch. Easy peasy

Instead of metal I would use PVC piping cheap and lightweight. Good Luck

What about a screened canopy screwed to the deck?

If using the PVC pipe, you can order it without the printing on it. Great time and effort saver.

PVC is also very easy to paint any color you want. No screen material would be wide enough for the whole porch, but you could "sew" the seams with fishing line....or thin wire. You could even make the seams a design feature with an interesting "stitch" and bright plastic string or heavy duty upholstery thread. With a heavy knit needle, you can even machine sew the seams. Most of these won't be totally sun resistant, so you might have to touch up every couple of years.

I found a heavy screening from New york screen that claims to be animal claw proof. Now I know how I put it up to keep coons, possom, etc off the deck and my cats on the deck.
  • We screened our porch in with the mesh from Home Depot. It comes on rolls, large enough to cover the areas and in different grades to block the bugs.
