Wood floors and dog toenails

We are replacing some old flooring in the kitchen with oak flooring and I'm worried about the dog's nails gouging or scratching the wood. Not an issue or look for other floor options?

i dont have hardwood dloors, but when i was looking at hardwood, i was told that pets would scratch it, so i went with laminate. The laminate I chose is very very deceiving to most & looks like real wood & I have absolutely no problems with the pets scratching..& i have 4 dogs & 4 cats running around at all times.

I have laminated floor put in a week ago... my dogs is having trouble walking on the floors,,,keep cutting there toes nails,,still is not helping,,,help

I did a lot of research before I put in our laminate floors. Walking on hardwood can give your dogs hip problems. My dog has an easier time with our laminate than the hardwood that was already in the house. The laminate has groves and is not as smooth as the hardwood. When my daughter brings her big dogs, there are lots of scratches on the hardwood and they cannot get their footing.

Sorry....we have hardwood throughout the entire house, except for 3 full bathrooms, and Jake (10 year old Lab Mix) and our German Shepard before,,,,,,,may have scratched the floor, but they never had trouble walking on in. And the wood can be screened to remove the scratches every several years. Having been involved with flooring for over 20 years (ran the flooring department at HD) I personally would never have a laminate floor in my home. Gary

Mine also don't have a problem except when they are running fast and doing the dog frenzy thing. If my hardwoods aren't scratched. I am also getting ready to redo my floors because I want darker floors. I think you will be thrilled with hardwood. It increases the value of your home, it looks better, it's cleaner and healthier and it will last a life time with the proper care.

Hardwood in a kitchen is just a bad idea...dog or not. I have done dozens of wood flooring repairs due to minor water damage. Put in some water proof and durable tile. as far as durable wood goes, we have over 1000 sq feet of Jatoba and Bolivian Rosewood in our 3 dog home....no problems with nails because these wood are so much harder than oak.

if you stain them then your dogs will scratch them. Have you considered painting them with an undercoat of a different color? Then if the dogs scratch them it just looks antique.

I have no experience with real wood flooring but I can tell you from personal experience, laminate is NOT a good option for a kitchen. Frankly, I don't think it's a good option for anywhere in the house. I have laminate in some of my rooms (the kitchen being one) and I absolutely hate it. Although it's only been down 3 1/2 years, I can't wait for my budget to allow replacing it. If I so much as drop an ice cube and don't pick it up, that little bit of water will make the floor bubble, swell and the seams separate. It is also very slippery and loud to walk on (even with the noise-reducing underlayment). Certain types of shoe soles are extremely slippery on it and there were several times I nearly landed on my behind. I've learned rubber soled shoes or barefoot is the safest way to walk on it. @Norma B The laminate was also very difficult for our dogs to walk on, especially as they got older and less agile. I had to put down throw rugs in all the traffic paths just so our aging German Shepherds had enough traction to move from one room to another. And loud...oh my gosh, 48 toenails from 3 big German Shepherds click, click, clicking across the laminate floors constantly was enough to almost drive my husband and me crazy! If you want a floor that looks like wood but stands up to pets and works well in the kitchen, I would recommend Trafficmaster "Allure" vinyl planks. Have it in one bathroom and LOVE it! Can't wait to replace all my laminate with it. It's very soft on the feet, fairly quiet to walk on, and water resistant. It's also a very budget-friendly flooring option. Another option you may want to consider for your kitchen is tile that looks like wood planks.
