To be honest everyones taste is different ,however my advise to you is to start by sculling down your furniture. It appears to large for the room.Next are you planning to paint, new carpets and accessories?

From looking at your photos you have a lot of natural light from your windows and a great neutral wall color. Your flooring also looks very nice. The furniture looks like a larger scale but it goes nicely in the space. I think some drapery panels are in need in a pattern ( geometric, floral, etc) and you could add some punches if color with pillows, throws or some artwork. Play off the tones in your area rug!

If you're keeping all the furniture I would go with lighter colors for the drapes. Play off the existing colors in your home. Are you replacing any furniture ? Also if you aren't sure which direction to go with accents and curtains if you have a Kohl's store near, they have nice options for the home and their return policy is great. If you try something and don't like it you can easily return it.

First thing I see is that there is too much large furniture in the area. If you could start by removing a few pieces that would make the area look larger. As for colour I would pick one from the chairs for curtains .Then add some art work and accent with bright colour accents. Have fun and enjoy..

For furniture, I'd go with smaller scale, but still comfy. The room is a beautiful size but the furniture you have now is massive. Ditch the big armchairs and the whole idea of a sectional. Consider matching sofa and love seat at right angles - much more flexible than a sectional. Or even consider two matching sofas if the scale is appropriate. Your walls appear light gray. I would use taupe with that pale gray in order to warm up your colors. Be careful buying everything matchy-matchy and keep in mind that the current craze with gray may look very dated in a few years. I've seen more and more designers moving back to warmer colors as gray can feel cold and may become tedious over time. For your drapes, put up 96" white sheers. They will look GREAT with your pretty white trim (leave your blinds for privacy). Your high ceilings will look great with the longer length curtains. Add lamps and/or floor lamps to add some height and for goodness sake, don't hang your art any higher than eye level. If you go to a really good furniture store, they will have a designer on staff that can help you make the right choices.

First, you must decide what type of decor you love. Is it country, traditional, trendy or contemporary. Do you like to mix it up? Google decorating styles. Use hometalk too. And what about Pinterest.com. When you find something, 'pin' it. Take your time. Then go back through all you have researched. This way you will save much time, energy and money.

Well I am going to declutter and get rid of the big piece and paint not sure of colors. What is trend now for colors?

Personally, I think color should be what you love, but keep it light to open up the space. I think you made the right decision with that big piece. I kind of like the chairs, but I'm partial to oversized furniture. If you need more seating, just get a couple more chairs to replace that bigger piece, but like they say, "less is more".

Before you throw out, replace and paint, there were three things I noticed immediately. First, how much space is there where the photographer was standing behind the sectional? Is there a dining area? I can see that there is enough room for a glass-top table with tissues. Second, the large area rug seems to be centered on the TV in the alcove with the closest part of the sectional completely over it. Does the other end of the sectional extend beyond the carpet? Do the chairs overlap the area rug, even a little? They seem to be not included in the furniture grouping with the sectional. Third, while the interior door is white to the left of the front door, the front door is dark with white trim. I'm not a formally educated interior designer for sure and I am truly still puzzled with my own living room layout. I've also decided that I am going to take my ideas for you to heart and do my own soul searching. First, before you bring out the check book, or even a credit card, I'd move the rug, sectional, and chairs so that they make more of a 'conversational grouping.' Have you tried the rug placed at 90 degrees from where it is now? I'd forget about centering the carpet, focusing it on the TV. Instead of just pivoting the rug, can you move the closest edge in the picture towards the front window and chairs? Bring the chairs into the group, away from the front wall, and onto the edge of the turned carpet. Would it be so bad to even have one of the chairs at a diagonal to the front door area? Move the sectional so that only the front legs are on the carpet, like the part of the sectional to the right in the picture. With the chairs, no matter what their size, moved away from the front wall, how about a tall areca palm, up-lighted in that corner? A special friend of mine wants to replace his drapes and do a few more changes at his place. I am collecting pictures of different styles of drapes. I only know that he doesn't like what he has and the color pink. Have you gone through the Web sites and collected pictures of styles of drapes and furniture that you really like, no matter what the color? Let the different pieces of the puzzle "speak" to you as individuals, then look at pictures of furniture groupings and find those that you really like. Can you substitute your "I really like/want" pieces into the pictures? As far a grey as a color goes--what is your favorite color? A few months ago, I saw an aqua-colored towel and simply thought that I "liked" that color--it made me feel happy and always has. Until then, I had been totally unaware that turquoise was an "in" color. What colors make you happy? I personally detest the idea that marketing staffs and designers decide what colors I am going to like, what will be the hottest in the next five years. Even what car colors will be are decided five years in advance! Who are they to say that a certain color makes you feel good, that you just have to have it to belong in the rest of society? On to another thought, from several interior design shows in the past on HGTV, I remember a "rule of five"--use up to five fabric patterns, in differing pattern sizes. I see only two patterns in your room. There seem to be two sizes of florals in the rug and the chairs, although I can't see the chairs clearly. Oops, just went back to the pictures and found another small, maybe checked pattern in a throw in the second picture. And, the lap rug is reversible, two different solid colors of mauve? What are your throw pillows like? Stripes can be subtle and actually be only in the texture of the woven fabric. I need to take a break--find out from you and others if I'm way, way off base.
