When You Feel Brass is Out-Classed and Pewter is Cuter...:)

When brass is out classed.....make it cuter with pewter.... I purchased this beautiful (very heavy) bed but just didn't like the brass accents. So I changed the brass color to pewter. Took a few attempts to get the look I wanted....but pretty pleased with the outcome.
This is what it looked like before.
I taped everything off really good and wrapped with plastic cling wrap and spray painted it (I did remove a couple of the spindles first, but it was tricky and I decided best to leave attached to the frame - they actually un-thread from the frame). I then used a foam brush and painted it all black and wiped it off to the desired texture. I did take a crumpled paper towel and dabbed it in the oil paint and blotted it on in places to give it a hammered look. I let the oil paint dry then sprayed with a clear top coat paint just to make sure none of the black would come off on the bedding.
I first purchased a can of pewter paint from Hobby Lobby....but in the trial, it gave it a lavender tint....which scared me...LOL....NOT the look I was going for. I ended up using Satin Nickel paint and antiqued it with Grumbucher oil paint (the kind in the tube). The great thing about using the oil paint is it stays workable for quite long and if you remove too much, just paint over the area again and work it through.
And the finished product....:)

Do you know if a source to get finials from if you need to replace a missing one on a metal bed? Home Depot carries the new metal paints in hammered and several other types that work great. It saved me from having to make things look distressed etc. like your finial change where you used oil paint.
