Hanging Herb Baskets From Thrift Store Lampshades

Small, outdated lampshades from the thrift store are easy to repurpose into baskets to hold potted plants and herbs!

Strange, small, falling-apart lampshades often litter the shelves at thrift stores- so I set out to do something truly unique with them! They're plentiful, cheap, and come in just about every size and shape you can imagine.
I removed the outer fabric and adornments, exposing the metal shell underneath. I also bent down the inside mechanism (the part that hugs a flame-shaped lightbulb). They were going to make PERFECT little baskets!
I decided to spray paint everything gold to match chain I already had (aff link) using this GORGEOUS gold spray paint!

Then, I simply connected everything together, creating a vertical herb garden for my front porch!
Then, I placed potted herb plants in each lampshade-basket- how perfect is that?? You can't even tell they were ever lampshades!
I just love how it turned out and it was really easy to make- I'm already thinking about making a second one for my back porch, to hold three different herbs! No worries about rabbits other garden wildlife eating my herbs now...and it's a fantastic repurpose for some otherwise unexciting lampshades. Happy DIYing!

I love the idea. I would be so inclined to do the same thing but how do they stand fair in wind? have you considered anchoring them in the ground with a longer single chain from the lowest pot?

Doesn't the dirt fall out the bottom?

I found the first glass shade attached below at goodwill and it had very pale cream colors and I thought I could paint it.... so I did and it led to other hand painted lamps. I have a few other designs I created using doodle patterns from pinterest.
