Tracy, if you scratch the wood and there is no green on the inside, cut the roses down to just a few inches high and maybe they will resprout. If they are grafted, usually there is a slightly swollen spot, and you cut below the graft you won't get the same rose. As for black spot and aphids, for the black spot you can use a fungicide but I try not to spray in my garden with chemicals, aphids you can blast off with the hose or use some insecticidal soap. Awe that is sad. I hate when the deer get my flowers!! For future reference you can spray them with several different things. First is Liquid Fence, you can buy this in any lawn and garden place, but is is a bit on the pricey side. You can also make a concoction of Irish spring liquid soap and water spray the plants and reapply after watering or when it rains. And another is egg whites and, pepper, garlic and water. All work well. Just don't forget to keep reapplying.

hello Tracy, if you cut them back they will come again and you can take a hot pepper( use gloves as the pepper burns) and rub the veins of the pepper on the leaves, this will burn their tounges and they will shy away and it won't hurt them ; or sprinkle hot pepper powder on leaves till they leave them alone. Hope this helps.

used to have roses and some butterfly would lay eggs and the worm would tunnel into the stems, had to look and find the hole and either trim the bush back or stick a wire into the hole to kill the worm
