Depending on your budget. the link that Janet gave is the most economical way to go. You could also put down laminate flooring on the floor. Replace the stair treads with hardwood treads and paint the risers or cover the risers with thin hardwood plywood matching the treads.

Wow...there are so many ideas to chose from, just Google decorating stair risers an viola take your pic. When I'm stumped on an idea I research it and man what a selection. Then I'm off and running to get it done.

http://www.hometalk.com/diy/staircases/paper-bag-floor-stairs-635704Depends on where the stairs lead to - are they basement stairs or a main stair case in the house. You can search the site stair redo. If you are in a strict budget you could consider paper bag stairs - http://www.hometalk.com/diy/staircases/paper-bag-floor-stairs-635704 - my daughter did this as she was on a strict budget and this can be done for the cost of either postal paper or paper bags from the grocery store and some white glue and water, stain in the colour of your choice and a few coats of floorpo] plyurethane. Very cost effective and easy to do.

If you choose to paint the treads black...don't! Instead, use a dark gray. The black is to severe and will show every speck of dust. The dark gray is "softer" and will look great. Also, paint the risers white...maybe Dover White from Sherwin Williams. (The white risers are much better for night-time stair climbing!)

You could paint them and add decorative tiles to the risers. Or I have seen some cool designs on Pinterest.com where they paint a theme on the risers such as a bunch of book titles or inspirational sayings.

Hi Edith it is Donna from Toronto Canada...I am in the same boat as you I have so many ideas I can't narrow it down but I think I would like tiles on the risers and if I can get the wood off of the pallets without splitting..... I want to plain them down to 5/8"..... stain them and use that for the stairs and then buy a nose for the edges either way it will take me some time so good luck.....
