Tree stump planter

Does anyone know a) how difficult it is to cut out the center of a tree stump and b) how to do it correctly? We have a huge stump and I saw one used as a planter on Pinterest that I would love to recreate, but there were no instructions.

Can I suggest something easier? How about planting something like vinca vine which will grow and cover the stump? Afterwards, you can always add a decorative planter to sit on top of the stump as a focal point if you wish. I would NOT suggest using gasoline as this can get out of control very quickly.

You can use a hole saw kit for wood that attaches to a drill (I'm attaching an example of one below from Lowe's). You can just drill holes out of the stump in a shape/circle as wide as you want then as deep as you want it to be. The depth will take some time depending on how much soil you will need to use for the type of plants you will be using. This would be the method I will be using for a stump that I have for the same purpose. Good luck on your project!

use a drill with a large bit and make alot of holes close together, then use a chisel to break between the drilled holes. You can manage the depth you want it and it will give you a fairly smooth interior.

Your welcome....Yes...plant the vinca vine on the ground surrounding the stump. It's pretty hardy and can easily be found at your local Home Depot or Lowes--also a cheap plant. It should cover the stump nicely and you might even want to put the top of a birdbath on the stump. You could also plant perennials around the stump. Just realize that the soil where some trees have grown may not be suitable for some flowers. - Stump removal is expensive so what not try this first! :) Good Luck!

Thanks for such a great idea! We actually have about 7 sumps in a row that we purposely kept to use as seats around the patio when we had to cut down, sadly, our 27 year old elm tree last year. I love the idea of planting perennials around them. I am a butterfly fanatic and have some mikweed growing right by them so I will look to plant things that are known to attract butterflies. Thanks so much!
