Canvas drop cloth curtains

Hi, I want to do a project turning canvas drop clothes into curtains and I want to paint a border on the bottom. I'm using Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch 2X General Purpose Spray Paint. My questions are - After I wash and dry the drop cloth and paint the border, do I wash again after the paint dries? Or should I not wash the first time and wait to wash after the paint dries? Either way should I worry about paint coming off in my washer and dryer? I rent the home and the washer/dryer is not mine.
Thanks, Mary

Does your paint say it can be used on fabric?

I would let it dry and not wash them until they need washing.

I would wash and dry the fabric first and then paint. You'll probably have enough canvas to test a spot with the spray paint. Because fabric is flexible, the painted areas might crackle when painted. Just something to think about. I don't doubt that it can be used on fabric but the best end result may not be a smooth finish. Unless curtains get extremely soiled, I've only had to taken them down and shake or vacuum them. I wouldn't think you'd need to worry about laundering them.

Why not use fabric dye or fabric paint? The fabric will absorb the color better.
