Steampunk Mosaic Coasters

We love to make mosaics and we especially love making them with resin. The clear resin lets the mosaic design really shine through. If you've never tried resin before, have no fear. It's all about mixing the two parts of the resin. And we'll show you how!

For this project we wanted to make coasters, but we couldn't find bases we liked that had sides to hold in the resin. Then we thought of jar lids. Cheap and the perfect size! We spray painted ours silver inside and out.

Next we made our mosaic design with glass tiles and little metal gears and things. We just glued them into the jar lids with permanent glue (you could use clear silicone). We made each coaster a little different from the next.

For resin we used Envirotex Lite Pour-On Finish. To mix your resin, pour 3 ounces of hardener in one cup and 3 ounces of resin in another. Then pour the two parts together into a third cup. Stir thoroughly for two minutes, then pour the contents into a fourth cup and stir for another two minutes. Pour the resin over the mosaic.

About ten minutes after pouring the resin, little bubbles will appear. Exhale over the surface of the coaster to release the bubbles. (The carbon dioxide in your exhaled breath releases the bubbles.) Let the coasters cure in a dust-free area on a level surface for 48 hours.

We love how these Steampunk Coasters turned out. Hope you'll try making your own!
