Brown Thumb Proof: Care for Iris Plants

Iris is one of those great plants that you simply can not kill and therefore it is excellent for novice gardeners or ones with little time to tend to a garden.
Frugal, impressive and easy to care for. If you are looking for an eye catching, perennial for your landscaping, Iris is your friend.
Here are our tips, from our personal experience (and some pretty photos to inspire you).
Irises are extremely brown thumb friendly and frugal.

Hardy perennials that die down in fall, they will come back blooming next spring with no care - at all.

We never water them - but keep in mind our garden is in New England, therefore it gets a lot of rain. Even if we lived somewhere with less natural humidity, Irises would still thrive with minimal water demands.
Sun vs Shade requirements.

A few images will "say" more that 4000 words:
I will add a few words though. Iris will do great with southern (full sun) exposure and also in west facing areas.

They do just as well in our home, on the north area BUT, they bloom a week or two later and usually have a few less blossoms than the ones we have facing south.
I mentioned how frugal they are. Once you have one Iris, all you have to do is dig it out and divide the roots. Instantly new plants.

My personal experience is that, no special division or tools are required. I actually "massacred" them with the same shovel I used to dig them out!

They still thrived (jump on the blog to see how well they are doing).
There is just one thing we do every year to our Irises and it takes less than 5 minutes.

Come over at TwoPlusCute to read why we...mow the Irises, more information about them (and for large images to see whether they are thriving or not. ;)
