remodeling two bathrooms.....what is the best, strongest, easiest to keep clean tile to use for the showers?

Most glazed tiles are pretty much the same when it comes to keeping them clean. Some may have minor surface "texture" in the tile it self or have a slightly "rough" texture to the glaze that is on the tile. From a strength point of view, this is not a concern for walls, as they are not being walked on etc. Natural stone can vary more so than that of Porcelain and Ceramic. Slate is on low end of ease of cleaning...polished granite and marble are up near the top for cleaning like glazed tiles. Grout lines are more of a cleaning issue than the tile. So working with thin lines and larger tiles will minimize the amount of grout to be cleaned. I prefer working with sanded grout as it looks better to me, when installed at 1/8 to 3 /16 inch spacing, the cleaning is minimized. BTW. The use of hardibacker is my first choice for setting tile.

Wipe them down after each shower use. Do not use any of those spray contraptions that shoot out cleanser. I cleaned homes and I have to say they are horrible!

I moved into my new house six years ago. One of the first things I did, before I ever used the shower was SEAL THE TILES AND GROUT. Zero problems since. I would recommend it to anyone and everyone.

I am guessing that your question in more directed toward grout. Often when people say they want to keep their tile clean they are referring to the grout. If it's the grout you are talking about then sealing the grout every 9-12 months with a good sealer will help out a great deal. Newer products like urethane grout never needs to be sealed and is does not tend to get dirty looking like standard cement grout.
