    • I don't know how 'crafty' you are however i'll tell you what i did, though i will be truthful & say i am qualified in the piquant & unusual when designing & then totally creating.. I bought some fake (& ugly) green bush like plant box that sits in a window sill box; for window sills i suppose.. I pulled it all apart, which left these little leaves that had a hole at the bottom (as that is where it was attached) and threaded a waterproof cable of some discription..* Now what i mean here is that its thin enough, & tough & is pliable thus being easy to use. This type of product does not tie well,& instead of plastic bag plastic/metal ties, which can break, i use the good old pipe cleaners bought at any craft or two dollar shop. Using lengths of 3metres of the waterproof string/or something(it will start to tangle & annoy you if you think you can handle bigger, before threading, do tie a knot at one of your 3m pieces then wrap a green pipe cleaner real tight, add a drop of super glue, press firmly with some glad wrap between your thunb & fingers;a few second then rip the sml piece of glad wrap off~ pls keep this process in mind:) Now start threading any way you like with the green fake leaf material • if you get a big eye flat base sewing needle, you can thread part of the plastic wire string (this is basically what it is & is used for everything that people can think off; just remeber the string needs to be tough. When you have threaded to almost the bottom, remove any extra help(like your special needle) add the next three metre thread wire by placing side by side & use a piece of a green pipe cleaner & tightly wrap about 3cm of both ends, repeat with the pipe cleaner @ the end with a drop of super glue, press firm with a little glad wrap then rip off, then continue to thread... If you think you can manage with the plastic string, then extend your pipe cleaner a bit, but always glue at ending points before continuing,& allow a minute to dry safely.. You can keep going untill you have made this amazing vine/ or you can jeep them short at 3 metres & add a few ends into a nice cermamic pot base using a waterproof glue; once dry then sit ontop of your air unit & just mess out the vines. They won't need caring for& are heavy enough to stay looking good in the way you will like it to look. * a note with the pot, stick underneath a tray with an air hole,& stick it to the bottom the wrong way not intended for use.. This just saves your air unit from bad weather 'issues' by having it elevated. But if you are like me, i continued to make three 5metre vines,& i wrapped them around the unit so it looked like a vine had gone mad & grown over it. You will have to be non pedantic here as you will require heavy duty clear glue to add to areas that have finished, on your air unit.• Before i glue anything, i place the item in position that i like;take a pic if it helps you to remember your lay out as you will have to remove before actually starting (yes it sounds confusing but i assure you its not.)... The only hard'ish part was the time making the vine, but if you were to try & find anything that looks this good when finished out on the market you will pay a fortune; all up my project cost $30. ... I've seen the prices out there,& for basic work, so i encourage you get thrifty & enjoy making your own original, beautiful plant decor, & your air unit will thank you.( the result acts as a sun sheild as well ,& that it aint heavy* including the choice of a cerramic pot version as one isn't using any heavy dirt/or other rocks..vines are simply glued on the inside all around the rim, cant see anything however, if it rains the water can fall through easy, thus using an upside down plant water holder with a hole..so all is safe)... The other method requires only your imagination to how you would like the vines to eventually look. Heart thought & fun adventures being crafty".. Madame Ra:))

why not build a folding screen using lattice?

Home improvement stores sell privacy screens for that situation.

Before you put any plantings around it or build an enclosure, make sure you meet the minimum requirements for airflow. It may not be pretty, but a broken unit you need to replace is uglier.

I was just about to type what Arabella wrote. The air conditioners are like this in Japan too. Horrible rectangle box hanging on top of the wall on the inside and gigantic cabinet sized box on the outside. That big fan is on there for a reason. I wanted to paint the ones I have, but the manufacturer said it would void the warranty.

Glue some mirrors to the sides, top, and bottom (or everywhere but the vents). Buy some hardware cloth (metal screen), spray paint it chrome, affix over vents. A foot away, place a few potted ficus or cycads that are the a foot taller than your AC unit. Spray paint some small plastic plant pots chrome and fill them with sand and succulent plants. Place succulents on top away from vents. Weave string lights through the potted plants. Enjoy!
