2 Kinds of Vertical Wall Gardens

When my flower wall garden died out I decided to make it easier by turning it into a Succulent Vertical Wall Garden http://www.onemoretimeevents.com/2013/07/succulent-vertical-wall-garden.html
I love the look of the flowers until it started to look like
This... everything started dying out after the winter
So I turned it into this with succulents much easier to care for!

I love succulent plants, any suggestions or arrangements are welcomed! Living in Louisiana is great for summer, but the winter calls for safety from the frost and freeze! Storage is a problem Thanks!

What is the soil mixture. How did you keep the soil contained when vertical?
Love this idea--but do you know of a way to put Fake chicken wire or something like chicken wire that is not so hard to handle(on my hands) as the chicken wire??? I am making earring holders and putting wire on Picture frames w decorations on top wire. I am asking if anyone knows of a product that is not wire but appears to be Chicken wire type look
