I have always loved the way that luminaries cast beautiful images on the wall. In honor of the up and coming 4th of July, I thought it might be fun to create a stars and stripes luminary! I picked up some glasses from the Dollar Store and some star stickers and tape, and went to town on a design. After adding some frosted spray paint and candles these beauties really came to life!
I just love how quick and easy these little cuties were.
The shadows they cast when they are separate is even more distinct!
SUPPLIES:

-Painter's Tape

-Dollar Store Glasses

-Frosted Glass Spray Paint

-Star Stickers

-Acrylic Paint (Optional)
STEP 1: Add stripes with painters tape

Cut strips out of the tape in the size of your choice and place them on your glass or glasses in whichever design you choose. For the tall glass I thought it might be nice to have a spiral effect.
STEP 2: Remove air bubbles

Make sure to press down on your tape and remove any bubbles to ensure that no paint gets underneath. This helps create a clean design.
STEP 3: Add stickers

Take your star stickers and place them all around the glass as you choose. Be sure to press these in place as well.
STEP 4: Paint around stickers (Optional)

I had an extra glass and wanted to see what it would look like with some color so I grabbed some acrylic paint and dabbed it around with a sponge brush filling in all the empty spaces around the stars. I filled in one stripe white and left one empty to be filled in with only the frosted glass spray.
STEP 5: Spray glasses with frosted glass paint

Using the frosted glass spray I coated all empty spaces on the glass. (If you do decide to include step 5 and color in your glass you can still cover the acrylic with frosted glass spray. It gives it a nice matte finish.)
STEP 6: Remove the tape

Once the frosted glass spray has dried you simply remove all the tape from your glasses.
STEP 7: Remove the star stickers

Carefully remove your star stickers being sure not to pull any of the paint away from the glass. I used a pin to trace around the stars before peeling them off to ensure that the paint was no longer clinging to the sticker.
STEP 9: Add candles

That's it! Now you are ready to enjoy your luminaries!
You could really use any shape of sticker to create the design of your choice! I might have to make some more of these with some other fun shapes!
On the left is the one that I painted in with the blue vs. the one that only has the frosted glass spray. The shadows when it is painted in are more intense, however I love the simplicity and elegance of the frosted one. Plus you can use the white one for Christmas too or even as a simple night light.
