Repairing Acoustic (popcorn) Ceiling Material

While the roofing company was re-roofing a rental condo unit of ours a roofer's leg went through the roof and ceiling of our unit. They attempted to repair the ceiling but it looks like one big white mess on the ceiling. Taking into consideration the the condo is 30 years old, I understand that to match the existing ceiling material would take some expertise. Does anyone have any clues as to how I can instruct them to make the patch match the existing ceiling? Our tenants are a bit upset over this and I need to take care of it immediately before, after 7-years, they think of moving out. Got any ideas? KMS you should be a good one for an answer to this question !! Thank-you in advance for any and all help.

With a popcorn ceiling, you don't want to use too much paint as it can become heavy and start to come apart. First of all, they can match the popcorn ceiling best if they used a blower and match the size of the kernels to the existing. Then they will have to paint the entire ceiling in order to keep the new area from being a different color. The best way to paint a popcorn ceiling is with a sprayer or large nap roller.

Tell them not to do it themselves..hire someone who has done it before. Popcorn ceilings are among the easiest ceilings to match...I've found. If someone hasn't screwed it up to begin with :)

Thanks for the answers, but I'm still hoping for more ideas. Supposedly they are using a professional repair person but he couldn't get any where near a match to the contiguous ceilings. I know the true fix is to scrape, texture and paint all of the ceilings but we can't do this with tenants living there. Perhaps a faux artist would be color savy. It might be easy enough to match the popcorn material but it's the color matching that is the problem. Hi ! Yair ~~ been very busy but it is good to be back asking my "girlie" questions ~~

If it is sheetrock, remove the 4X8 sheet. Replace it. And then tape,bed and float it. Spray the new piece with matching composition and repaint the whole ceiling .
