How to get rid of stumps

We are putting in a vegetable garden in a walled/raised area on the side of our house. We chain-sawed all the really old cypress, jade, random trees out down to their stumps---some alive still, and some dead (like a big yucca stump). We need to take out the stumps ourselves, and we need to find a way to do this inexpensively cuz we can't hire anyone.

My husband drilled holes with a large drill bit and put epsom salt in the hole and watered the holes. then when it was dead he burnt it.

You can rent a stump remover that will grind the stump to mulch.
