There are products such as "metal out" that remove the stains by just sprinkling on the steps. Available at pool stores.

    1. Do ask your pool supplier first. 2. I use those spongy metal scrubbies you get for kitchen pots and pans, they work wonders. 3. use a tougher metal wire brush if it is not painted surface. 4. muratic acid, but you would need to drain some. But when you say also bottom of the pool, I have a feeling you are looking at a full drain and big job or painting or professional job ahead of you. But after the fact, determine where it is coming from and change pipes, and install some filter system from the water source from the contaminants that caused it.

Are you sure they are stains from metal?

The stains are not from metal, they are under water in swimming pool. They just look like rust from metal.

The "metal out" is no scrub, no drain. Just sprinkle and it disappears.

sounds like algae to me. I would try some liquid shock and see if that make any difference.
