I am painting an iron trellis black metal

It is on top of a white wall which I am also about to paint. I'm just wondering which would be best to paint first?

It would be best to take the trellis off the wall.If it is possible.

I agree with Janet. Paint the wall first then attach the black trellis. A nice effect would be to place mirror behind the trellis. I've seen it done in a garden.

Janet is spot on take the trellis off the wall , make sure you wash the Trellis well, as they hold debris/dirt in the hollows, water pressure washing is best, then importantly treat any Rust with a good quality rust converter, because if you don't it will be back disfiguring your new paint within a year, I have seen the mirror trick before too, but it needs to be in a situation where it is easy to take off and clean, otherwise they get filthy and look terrible.

Always remember paint will not adhere to dirt, mould lichen or any other barrier between the new paint and the substrate, if you don't remove it prior to painting, the new paint will remove itself in no time, the same with painting new timber, over time bare timber exposed to the the Sun & weather will cause bare timer to go a greyish colour, any paint no matter what type will not adhere to that, so you have to sand those grey cellulose fibers off and back to a new surface other wise your efforts will be wasted.....have fun.
