Name This Moth.

I was checking on the progress of the grapes and I found this guy. I have never seen a moth like this. He did not move when we lifted the leaf to look at him closer or take his picture. I live in Southeast Michigan.

It looks like a Space Moth or a Walking Dead Moth. Can't be sure until it either defies gravity or moans mindlessly then attacks someone. Really beautiful though.

Right on Heidi. They are common here, We have lots of wild grape and plenty of pesky virginia creeper that the caterpillars feed on. My daughter's hobby when she was young was to collect moths and butterflies. There was always plenty of hawk moths around.

This was bothering me so much, that I spent some time on the web searching. I don't like the idea of things in the garden or yard that I don't know. This is what I found: Pandorus Sphinx (Euorpha pandorus) Primary food plants: Larvae feed on ampelopsis, grapes, and Virginia creeper. Adult food is nectar from flowers, including petunias, bouncing bets, and white campions. Which now means that I will have to keep an eye out for the caterpillars if I want to eat my grapes and not have them eaten for me.
