How can we improve the color our home's bricks?

My husband and I just bought our first home and I hate the exterior brick! It's not the brick, it's the color! It is busy and outdated! Any suggestions on how we can improve the front? Staining to a darker red? Painting? Help!

You can paint the brick with Exterior cement paint. Buy some samples and see which one appeals to you the most.

The Home Depot "Project Color" App can give you some ideas of what color you may prefer. If you choose to paint/stain the surface make sure you follow the directions "to the letter" and buy the best paint to do the task (Sherwin Williams is my go to). Trust me, it is not a fun job removing paint off bricks ( peeling/discolored)...that is why I mention that you follow all prep directions exactly as stated. If you have any questions, call the corporate technical customer service line and speak to them directly (they can always source the chemists that make the paint/stain). The best of luck to you on your project, congrats on your new home, and don't forget to send us pics of the project when done! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

What about painting the trim something more subtle to blend With the brick, then if you add something decorative to the side of the front door, it would break up the large expanse of brick and maybe this would be a less expensive"fix", and the brick would recede in the overall picture.

My Sister had her husband to semi transparent stain it, It was a ugly orange brick and she applied a cream colored stain to it with a paint gun and an air compressor. It turned out beautiful. It still has the look of brick with its different contrast of each brick, but more softened into the desired color of brick. It has been on her house for 10 years and still looks wonderful

Paint the brick as well as above the garage door. Have your front door and garage door match in a color, could be black as your front door is that. Ben Moore sandy hook gray would be a good neutral for your bricks.

Stain-do not paint- your brick. You can use semi-transparent if you want some of the color to show through, or you can use solid stain if you want complete coverage. Our house was hideous orange brick. We stained it 8 years ago and it still looks brand new. Paint can eventually flake off, but stain penetrates the brick and will not flake off. You can get the stain in any color you choose.

From my perspective having the white and cream color they work against each other. The cream is not nearly as stark a contrast and mellows out the brick. The front coir us dark and does not go with this style of house. Possibly if you lighten it up that might help. Go to the house that I redid last year. Ugliest house on the block that became the cutest on the block. I had a lot of help from libra designs who helps tons of people on Houzz. That us a great website for ideas also". Good luck.
