I actually don't know, it is not something that grows in our lawns (that I am aware of in New Zealand) but I would say it is a form of fungus.

Thank You Janet. It took me by surprise. Never seen or heard of anything like this. My 11 yr old granddaughter told us about it and she had touched it so I wondered how safe it might be. I poured white vinegar on it. Hope it might help get rid of it.

May be Nostoc? An algea that "blooms" with wet conditions, like during a lot of rain. I slipped and fell on a huge patch of this on a sloped area.

A type of mushroom. We find we get them when we use a manure based compost or soil. They usually die out as soon as the temps hit the 90s.

Thanks! I poured white vinegar on them. Our Temps for the next week is 100 so that ought to take care of them.

Some type of mushroom. I found some growing on the side of the trunk of my river birch clump. I just scraped it off and put it in the trash. We have had a LOT of rain the past couple of weeks, think that is why it grew on the tree.

Check with your local county extension office; while visiting relatives in Wisconsin, we hunted for these for hours in the woods, checking out the sides of trees and stumps. The ones we found were very white; ribbons tightly packed. They carefully removed them from the tree trunk, took them home, cleaned them up and cooked them. I didn't care for them, but everyone else raved about them... the word in Italian I don't remember, but it means "Mother of all Mushrooms."
