  • No. The latex will peel. It's best to remove the oil paint by stripping and sanding.

You will have to remove the existing paint. Try using Citristrip which is a non-toxic paint remover.

There are a lot of websites that address this issue. Would suggest doing some research before proceeding. Here's one website: http://www.todayshomeowner.com/video/how-to-paint-over-oil-based-paint-with-latex/

Yes you can as long as you use a primer in between ONLY. You do not need to remove the oil paint with that method. Make sure it is a high adhesion primer...read the label. It will say whether it can be used for that application. We can't buy oil paint here anymore, and I have done this numerous times, without any problem. You CANNOT however, just put the latex top coat directly over the oil paint.

If you paint the oil paint with a primer(like Zinnser brand primers) you can then paint it with latex. The Zinsser can specifically states this. Using it is the equivalent to stripping or sanding. Had to do this a lot in old houses where the woodwork had oil paint or paint of indeterminate composition.

There is a Zinsser primer (water based) that is specifically designed to paint over oil based paints. After painting with the Zinsser, you can then paint over with any type of paint you want. Front of can specifically says this. Works like a charm.

This did not work when I painted for the first time...it peeled the next day. Both finishes were glossy. I had to use primer to fix it, after scraping the peeling paint.

We tried this in our first house....about 40 years ago. Came out the next morning to little bubbles....when my husband tried to pop one, the paint all hung down in huge strips. Unfortunately I laughed.
  • Yes, if you use a bonding primer.
