Simple Stenciled Doormat

2 Materials
Finding a cute and colorful doormat can be a challenge if you're not in the mood to spend $50+. I was cruising the aisles at our local hardware store and noticed that basic doormats were really inexpensive. I figured there MUST be a way to fancy one of those guys up with a color and pattern that fits my decor! Turns out... you can have a custom doormat for WELL under $20! (Bonus points because this project will take you less than an hour.) Yes, please!!

I started with one of these basic natural fiber doormats. There readily available and, like I said... should be less than $10!

I'm a sucker for chevron so that's the pattern I went with for my stencil. Using plain ol' painters tape, I eyeballed my pattern by lining up one vertical piece for each of the zigs and each of the zags.

The blue tape didn't stick perfectly, but it worked well enough for the spray paint. You can see there are corners that are coming up, but I was careful to hold the spray can directly above the mat. Even though the tape wasn't 100% adhered, it worked well enough for the spray paint!

Any spray paint should work, but I love Rustoleum 2X.

The paint didn't stay on the doormat for ever, but it definitely lasted for a while. I didn't saturate the mat with spray paint, but I might try being a little heavier handed with my paint next time I do this. Another thought I had was to use a small foam brush to help work the spray paint into the fibers a bit more... I gave it a light coat and just let the paint dry on the surface.
