Coastal Inspirations With Saltwash

I’m back with another round of The Fab Furniture Flippin’ Contest. For the month of June, the theme was “Coastal Inspirations” and the contest was sponsored by Saltwash.
I’ve been following Saltwash on Instagram for quite a while now, and I was so excited to get to try their product! Saltwash is an additive that you can add to any type of paint to create a worn, beachy look. Saltwash gives a layered and textured effect that can be achieved with a very simple process.
I figured the “Coastal” theme was a perfect excuse to use my favorite colors on the planet, and knew navy and turquoise would be my kind of perfection.

I mixed up my Saltwash layer first. I had some leftover latex paint (I used a combination of Window Pane and Watery by Sherwin Williams) that I mixed with the Saltwash additive. The goal is to get the mixture to a “cake batter” consistency in this step.
My piece for this contest was an old bookshelf that has been sitting in my classroom for years, but I’ve grown tired of it collecting used gum wrappers that students are too lazy to throw away, and brought it home to find a better use for it!
I gave it a quick scrub down, and began to apply the layer of Saltwash. It’s recommended that you glob it on. It’s definitely far from the paint technique I’m used to, but it was very nice to not have to worry about how I slopped the paint on there!
After it was completely dry, I quickly painted on a coat of navy-colored paint. There was NO Saltwash in this layer. (I used some more leftover paint…this time it was Indigo Batik.)
Once the navy layer was dry, I took my orbital sander and 150 grit sand paper and went over all the surfaces. This method of distressing was so fun and simple. It was almost like a game because I didn’t know exactly what my sanding would uncover or what my final outcome would actually look like (which took me completely out of my comfort zone!)

As I started sanding, here is what I was able to uncover:
