Easy Garden Border From Pallets

Though I've never been much of a gardener, I'm quite pleased with the fact that I've been able to keep my few veggies and herbs alive this year. Rob made me a little garden area outside last year and it needed some pizazz, so I decided to add a pop of color to it. This garden border was quick and easy, and to top it off, it was super inexpensive!
Supplies:

-pallet wood

-exterior acrylic paint (I ended up using Behr exterior flat paint in the following colors: Cozy Cottage, Tiki Torch and Sweet Rhapsody.)

-paint brush

-fine grit sandpaper
STEP 1: Measure

To start, I stuck my pallet wood in the dirt where I wanted my garden border to go and I marked how far up I wanted it to stick out. You don't have to do this step--you can just cut random pieces--but I wanted to at least have an idea of where to start my cuts.
STEP 2: Cut pallet wood

Next, I cut my pallet wood in the different heights that I wanted them to be. You can cut yours all one height or you can do them staggered--either way, they're nice!

If you're putting your border in hard ground, you may want to cut the ends of your wood pieces at an angle in order to create a pointed edge--this may make it a little easier to knock them into the ground.
STEP 3: Sand

After you cut your wood pieces, you'll want to quickly knock off the edges. I just took a piece of fine grit sandpaper and sanded the edges.
STEP 4: Paint

Finally, paint your wood pieces. Once they're dry, stick them in the dirt/ground--I put mine as close together as possible and I used a hammer to knock them down into the dirt.

I love how this simple border adds character to my little garden. This project can also be done around your flower garden in order to keep your mulch in without you having to go out and purchase one of those metal borders.
I didn't realize when I chose my colors that they're almost a little patriotic, which I love! This garden border looks, to me, a little vintage-cottagey (I think I just made up a new word) and can easily be removed if need be.

Around our area in Portland, OR on Craigslist in the free section, many places list them here. Great idea!

I would be more concerned about what is in the processed food that you buy from the supermarkets than what will come out of the pallet. Fantastic idea. Looks great.
