Make Your Own Chalkboard Out of a Thrift Store Picture

4 Materials
Have you ever wanted a huge farmhouse style chalkboard, but not wanted to pay retail for it? I have the solution for you! Turn an old framed print from a thrift store into one with just a little paint.
First, look for a large framed print in good condition, with no glass. (You don't want an actual painting because the brush strokes might be raised, which will interfere with your smooth chalkboard.)
You'll need:

1. Chalkboard Paint (I used Valspar, but Rustoleum and Decoart also make great versions)

2. Brush and roller

3. Chalk

4. Chalk paint and finishing wax for the frame
If you can easily remove the print from the frame, do that first. I couldn't, so I decided to paint it in place. Then use a roller and/or brush to paint on one coat of chalkboard paint.
While the chalkboard paint is drying, you can paint the frame with your chalk paint. Allow both paints to dry and repeat with both the chalkboard paint and the frame paint.
Once everything is dry, lightly sand the frame to bring out some of the fun details.
Apply finishing wax with a cloth or brush, and allow to dry for about 1/2 an hour. Buff gently for a subtle sheen.
Important: Season your chalkboard before using! Simply use the side of the chalk to rub all over, then wipe off with a dry cloth or eraser.
Now your chalkboard is ready to use! For more tips and tricks, as well as some great tutorials on how to get those beautiful chalkboard lettering designs, check out the full blog post.
