Can I DYI Paint a Stove Vent?

A Design Group Atlanta, LLC on Jul 22, 2013Yes. Use Rustoleum high heat spray paint which they developed for outdoor grills and high heat surfaces. Should do a great job.Helpful Reply

KMS Woodworks on Jul 22, 2013This vent hood should be far enough from any heat source to use just regular spray enamel. The trick however will be doing a LOT or prep and ensuring any and all grease or oil residue is cleaned up first. This will take some time, and require multiple steps. I would start with a heavy degreaser, then follow that up with a paint thinner wipe, then as a last measure some TSP with a few rinses. Then a light sanding with some 220 grit, then primer and paint.Helpful Reply

White Oak Studio Designs on Jul 22, 2013Thank everyone for the ideas. There is very little grease on this vent as it gets wiped down with vinegar every week when we clean stove, counters, microwave etc. But will keep you other suggestions in mind.Helpful Reply

A Design Group Atlanta, LLC on Jul 23, 2013Definitely leave it in place or have a professional remove and reinstall it if it's impossible to get behind it. I didn't realize this was your kitchen stove. You can either go to an automotive store (some carry paint kits) or go to a dealership service department and see if you can buy automotive paint in the color of your choice. May be kicky to go with some other color, but of course I don't know your look or your colors. You can also get touch-up paint. Not sure why you're painting it, but in any case use a really good cleaner from a paint store to clean it first. No matter how clean you are, it will have grease in grooves, etc. that you never dreamed of. Sounds like a beautiful hood and pipe. I love that look.Helpful Reply

White Oak Studio Designs on Jul 23, 2013Yes, this is my kitchen stove. Everything was a sort of 1970's "beige" when I moved here. About 12 years ago I upgraded a bit to black appliances. I realize they are not the "in" stainless steel look but the extra $ for stainless on all three units at once; stove/fridge/dishwasher was more than I had saved so I went with black. (Also I didn't like the idea of the cleaning/polishing that stainless requires in the country with dirt and grit and when you cook as much as I do.) I've wanted to paint the stove vent ever since and even called an automotive place for a painting quote (then $85.00) but I couldn't figure out how to safely get the vent off and out. Then I started to read about DYI'ers who are painting their stove hoods themselves so began to think about that option. Thanks again!Helpful Reply
